If 60 days for Wifi iPad and 90 days for 3G, why does Apple say:

Wifi Shipping Late March
3G Shipping April

Why wouldn't they say?

Wifi Shipping Late March
3G Shipping Late April

The late March timeline is accurate. The wording to say April is likely because the FCC is moving it through the 3G testing, faster than expected. Or, perhaps other countries don't have as many regulatory hoops to jump through for the 3G, because it uses standard channels and equipment.

Or given that it's already february, more specificity is required with respect to March since March is only a few weeks from now.

I'm just hoping maybe the 3G iPad will come out in the beginning of April. That would rock.

I'm hoping the last week of feb. first of march we hear an exact date. Since the keynote was on the 27th and they say 60 days, the 27th of march is on a saturday. Do you guys think we'll see it before the 27th or that monday following?

Wouldn't it, though?!

Me, I think I'll be waiting for the 3G one, too, as today I realized just how valuable one could be. This morning I got up and my internet was down. Cable ISP (also the TV was down, too, but I didn't care about that). I used my iPhone to check email and to look in on the forum in which I'm a mod but found it frustrating with the small screen and having to continually resize stuff to make it readable for my aging eyes. I kept thinking, "this is great that at least I've got 3G on my iPhone.....but, boy, don't I wish I were using a 3G iPad right now!" That pretty much sealed it for me.

True, the kind of situation I experienced this morning isn't going to happen all that often, but....it pointed up to me that, yes, there WOULD be times when I would want/need to be able to get online and would for some specific reason not be able to access wireless at all. We had a major snowstorm and that is what affected the cable and why it went down. Because of the huge amount of snow that we got (everybody's still digging out) I couldn't just grab my MBA and jump in the car and drive off to a Starbucks or the local public library to get online via a WiFi hotspot, either.

Getting back on-topic: I imagine that Steve didn't really specify a time frame for the 3G iPad beyond just saying "April," as it could be just a few days into the month or it could be at the end of that month....much depends upon how quickly the device is approved for service by the FCC. Let's hope it's sooner rather than later!

I hear ya. I might get one with 3G and only activate service on months I really need it. Still mulling it all over though.

In all honesty, though, and I love the idea of iPads, if your carrier let you tether like so many you could have just done that, problem solved.

True, but also GPS on the 3G iPad. Not sure how often I'll use it, but I love the idea.

Bklynkid, that's it exactly. I think I'd rather put forth the extra $130.00 at purchase and have the option to then fire up the 3G and plunk out $15 for a given month if I need to do so rather than not having that option at all.....

Well, as far as tethering goes, AT&T hasn't seen fit to allow that yet with my iPhone and I'm really not into jailbreaking, so there we have it.

Do you guys think we will have store displays sometime before the actual release for us to buy? Or will it all happen on the same day?

The late March timeline is accurate. The wording to say April is likely because the FCC is moving it through the 3G testing, faster than expected. ...

Just FYI: the FCC doesn't do the tests.

You pay a third party company to do the 3G + Bluetooth + WiFi + interference testing, and you then submit the results to the FCC only when you're sure it'll pass.

The FCC reviews the results and can ask for more tests or clarifications, but with a good testing company your certification is assured. Apple tends to use the same testing lab for all their iPhones.

Moreover, there are third party companies called TCBs that have authority to approve equipment on behalf of the FCC. Pay them and you can even have your approval kept secret until the day you start sales. Interestingly, Apple hasn't taken this path yet.

Maybe they'll bring out the wireless-only iPad on March 31st and the 3G/wireless iPad on April 1st......
:D :D :D

Products usually are released/updated on a Tuesday (just like yesterday's release of Aperture 3). If anything it would be March 30th (or the 23rd if we're lucky) and April 27th (20th if we're lucky and for those really early hopefuls, April 5th).

I completely disagree. iPad is like iPhone. Friday releases and huge lines and media coverage. They will not release this on a Tuesday. Maybe preorders, but not for actual sale in stores.
