if a program is running and i shut my laptop does it sleep on it?

i just want to know if i can have my powerbook working on stuff, shut it, put it in its case and get on the train. get off and, wow, all done, task complete.
or if it just zonks out and i have to wate for it to finish.
if im not being clear-
i want to know if it will preform already initiated tasks at full speed when the screen is closed. and if not is there a way to tell it to?

No, everything stops running when it's asleep (when the lid is closed) unless you have an external display attached and use it in clamshell mode. It wouldn't be a good idea to have it running in your bag anyway, as it would overheat and also you run the risk of the hard drive crashing because of the bumps and jolts it'll get while being moved around.

hmmm, i see. that sucks. cause it would be nice at least to close it just for safetys sake. so i can keep it low profile wile working.
for being in a bag it should have a temperature limit then go to sleep.
as for bumping it around..... dont.
it is the most frustrating feature i think. everything else frustrating so far was just me. but yah,... sucks.

You could give SleepLess a try.
But beware the risk of overheating and a broken hdd (if you move it around)!

Because of the risk it would seem safer to just let it sleep normally. The damage to the hard drive would make this scary.

I understand that you think it would be a feature, but I feel much better knowing that if my laptop is closed, it's asleep and won't wake up (until I open it). I often carry my laptop in my backpack, and having the possibility of the computer waking up so that it can overheat and or have a hard drive crash isn't too appealing to me.

Every process is shut down when the machine goes to sleep. I do believe there is a way to make it so when you close the notebook, it does not go to sleep.

Not necessarily shutdown, but rather paused, if it were shutdown then the machine would be shutdown. I can start an effect on photoshop and close the lid, the process pauses to go to sleep, but it's not killed/shutdown.

Can't you just delete the program?

One of the reasons why lidless operation isn't really officially supported or endorsed by Apple is that some of the heat is made to escape from the keyboard by design. When the lid is closed, this can't happen, and it will heat up a lot quicker than usual.

i did.
i think it gives a sudo comand and turn the feature on and off with that. i think its stuck on. i dont know much about the terminal and typing comands but im up for what ever gets it back to normal. anyideas.

ok. im pretty sure everything but vlc sleeps. dvd player and i tunes and my disc drive stop. and start up again were they left off. but if i watch a movie on vlc and i shut the lid, wate a minute, open it back up, and the video advances.
i cant here it playing when the lid is shut. and when i look at the screen rite after opening it. the original image i saw at the last second before shuting the lid apears frozen for a moment, like i would expect. but instead of starting back up when the computer warms up, it jumps ahead to were it would be as if it had not been stoped (put to sleep).
is that how vlc always is? im not sure. and i want to make sure i dont have a real problem.
