If Apple offers the iPhone on carriers besides AT&T, I'm curious how much the hardware would cost if some carriers offered the phone without a contract.

Considering that the 8gb iPod Touch costs $199, it would seem reasonable that a new no-contract iPhone could be had for $249 or $299.... which could be very appealing.

While that would be reasonable, you are talking about cell phones. More specifically, a mobile phone by Apple. Reasonable and cell phones will probably never be used in the same sentence.

599 and 699, saw it last time I was in the store. Honestly, thats high. Should be 499/599(or 599/699 unlocked)

Agree!

What you could do if you already have AT&T is add and iPhone as an additional Family Plan for $9.99. I did that to get a 3gS because my 3G plan is still under contract. I am paying Data Plan for one phone, not two. I sold the 16gb 3G for $399 shipped on ebay. I post the ad here, but no hits. It sold within an hour on eBay.

It is actually $499/599/699 for 3G 8GB/3GS 16GB/3GS 32GB. And also, don't forget that the $199 iPod Touch is the exact same as the 2G 8GB model (older CPU, half the RAM of the 32/64GB models). So really, the fair comparison would be the 3G iPhone instead of the 3GS, since the 3G iPhone and the 2G Touch are roughly of the same generation as each other.

So, currently the lowest out-of-contract price for an iPhone is $300 more than the lowest-priced iPod Touch.

What difference would it make what the ipod touch costs? its still not a phone and doesn't require a monthly plan. instead of thinking its an iphone without a phone, try seeing it as an ipod with wifi. the ipod touch could cost only $50 and the no contract iphone will never ever be remotely close to the cost of the ipod touch.

why not just get ATT for a month and cancel it??

$99 + $170 ETF

I actually added another line on mine to get the 3gs too... paying $10/month isn't so bad... I just have the extra line doing nothing right now. I was going to pay the ETF but $10/month isn't so bad extra... especially considering ETF decreases $5/month so technically it's only really "costing" $5/month if/when I ever decide to cancel it.

Apple is still going to charge phone companies full price for the iPhone, even if it's on multiple carriers. And what incentive would those multiple carriers have to undercut eachother's prices? They're all going to want people to sign up and lock their phone to them exclusively. Prices will stay the same.

You leave out the tax, the the cost of 1 month of service, and the fact that he'd be committing fraud.

That's not fraud. He's paying for everything and is doing everything outlined by AT&T in the case he wants to cancel his contract.

LOL fraud.

you could always buy the refurbed 8GB iPhone from At&t then cancel the plan... close to the same price
