Title question is kind of self explanatory. Face ID stopped working on my iPhone X... went through all possible solutions to get it working again and nothing worked. Spent an hour on chat last night while reiterating the steps I'd taken and them running diagnostics, and they've referred me on to a Genius appointment in-store.

So... if they end up having to replace my X, is there any chance at all they've give me an 8 Plus instead? I'm fine if they don't; it's just that I haven't been completely in love with the X and somewhat regret buying it, so it just occurred to me that this might be a way to remedy that.

I very much doubt it, I tried to swap colour of my iPhone when it had to be replaced and they said it had to be a like for like replacement. But good luck if you feel like asking.

None at all. You might be able to wrangle a refund if you haven't had the phone too long and you're politely persistent.

So, most of the replies have told you no. It must be a like for like replacement.

Do you know why?

It would be an exception. And if Apple creates an exception for you, then it becomes a precedent. Once that happens, other people can try and get the same thing you got by claiming YOUR precedent as the reason why Apple has to give THEM an exception.

Pretty soon the word gets out that Apple will let you swap models when you replace a phone. What do you think happens then?

Chaos.

Because that kind of thing is going to attract the kind of people that try to game the system. Don't like X phone? Break it. Get a replacement. Apple will give you a different model.

Don't like the color? Smash it. Get a replacement. Apple will give you a different color.

Pretty soon you've got a madhouse of people trying to get something they really aren't entitled to and didn't originally buy.

Right now. In this time. Apple ALREADY has this problem! There are people trying to game the system to get something out of Apple that they have no legitimate claim to. And that's with the like for like policy already in force. It's the very reason Apple has this policy.

Now I make no assertion that you are one of those people. You're just asking a question. But think about it. People assume that because they are coming from an honest place that the rest of society is going to be honest just like them.

Not really.

Yes - Apple's return policy is already very generous, and their actual return practices even more so.

Yeah, here's the kicker on that…

So, Apple says "OK, we'll let you switch models". Person X waits until September of year X when Apple is releasing a brand new model of iPhone. Person X then damages their current phone, goes in and gets it replaced either under AC+ or OoW and bang - replacement with brand new, just released model of iPhone. Person X has effectively paid less than half the cost of the new phone model.

And that's the major reason this isn't allowed by Apple.

I would never say never, because somebody ALWAYS chimes in about an exception they know about where this happened
I have never seen it happen, and I certainly wouldn't count on it, but it won't hurt to ask if that is what you prefer to do
They may work out something for you, but probably, most likely, not

Better off just selling the refurb and then buying a new or refurb 8+ on eBay. 8+ is going for 650 to 750 and X is go for 900 to a little over a thousand.

Sad thing is, back in November I sold a 7+ for $650. Apple’s battery scandal really effed over a lot of people. This might actually be the first time using the iup program comes out ahead.

This doesnt make any sense lol. OP wants a replacement for a defective iPhone X but wants a phone that values less as the replacement (8 plus).

It does make sense.

You have to take the value out of the replacement equation.

Either Apple allows this which means they allow it for devices with less value AND for devices with higher value or you don't allow it at all.

There is no "Apple allows it for devices of less value but not devices of higher value."

That just opens another can of worms.

You can ask the wroth the may say no, so you can still sell it and buy a new 8+

I can't attest to what Apple would do specifically in this situation, because I have never heard of any other examples. But I do know that some carriers (Verizon) for example, they absolutely will not allow you to switch to another phone from the one that you had if you had a defect, which they will replace the phone with the exact same model/storage/color.
