Surely Apple would sell more movie / tv content if they reduced the purchase price if the movie / tv show had previously been rented by the same apple id.

I would be much more likely to purchase something i had previously rented if the purchase price was slightly less. I still tend to go off to Amazon as DVD's tend to be a bit cheaper than iTunes store.

I like your idea, I'm surprised nobody has commented. Maybe the topic has been discussed previously?

I refuse to buy any movies from iTunes. See the recent thread about needing Internet access in order to play stuff back. Phooey on that. DVDs are much more user friendly.

BTW I do buy (some) music videos, since they aren't DRMed. Too bad that Apple has removed (or has never sold) the uncensored versions of many videos. Definitely no sale of censored versions to me. E.g. they removed "Money for Nothing". I guess the word "f-a-g-g-o-t" upset too many people?

PLEASE do not start half truths, people will take them as word. It has been recently discussed that maybe (some people disagree) maybe you cannot home share without Internet. But it has never once been reported that you cannot play itunes purchased content without an Internet connection. You can 100 percent without a doubt play locally and AirPlay iTunes content from your Mac or I device to your apple tv without an Internet connection.

Sure home sharing is convenient but at the end of the day AirPlay works well and does not have the alleged Internet requirement of home sharing.

What I would like is if renting was cheaper in general. 4.99 for renting an HD movies is too expensive when you can go to Redbox and get a blu-ray for 1.50 for 24 hours.

I also do like the idea of the original post though. I don't think I have ever been comfortable with buying a movie that I haven't seen yet so that would come in handy.

I agree Apple are way to expensive, i have never understood why you have to pay the same price for a digital download as a DVD when there are no manafacturing costs !

Because Apple doesn't set the prices, the studios do. And they believe you should pay that much.

I agree with you, with no manufacturing costs, digital only copies should be cheaper. But think about the costs in manufacturing a DVD; about 10 to 20 cents; box and other things, another 20 to 30 cents. The rest of the costs is marketing; and that is the same regardless. I guess that's why they think it is OK to keep the price the same. BUT I look at it as a less value to the customer. You buy a DVD/Book/Album you can use it for 6 months and then sell it to recoup most of your investment. Not true with digital.

Oh well.

I think they should bring back actual renting of TV Shows. I personally do not want to own TV Shows. I do own some Movies because I want to take them with me as I travel. They were charging .99 to rent an episode for a while but they discontinued that and gave the excuse the most people want to buy for 1.99 (I think). I am really hoping for more options to the high cost of CABLE.
