if Apple sent me e-gift card from trade-in(to my Gmail email address), is it safer to link it to my Apple account until I can order the iPhone 13 next month?

based on what I've read, the only downside is that the gift card code redeemed and loaded into my Apple account can no longer be used at a retail brick & mortar Apple Store (which I'm fine with).... or are there other negatives to loading the gift card balance into my Apple account?

It is safe. You can add the gift card to Wallet where you can use for any purchase through the Apple Store app or in store However, to use the gift card, you will need to go into checkout options and checkout the item, hit add a gift card and select the gift cards you want to apply to the order. You can test it out to see how it works before the preorder.

You can use the gift card in stores even if you add it to Wallet because the sales rep can scan the QR code of the gift card.

It will look like this. Don’t confuse Apple Store gift cards (usually for trade-ins) and Apple iTunes gift card)

I just add them to my Wallet app. I can't remember exactly how it works when ordering online, but it should work fine.
