Hi,

I am just curious, if applecare agrees to replace one's defected machine, what do they want back? Do they want all the cables and cds and etc. of the defected machine, or they just want the defected laptop itself? And what do they send as a replacement, possibly a whole new box like for a new purchase?

Anyone with this experience, could you please solve my puzzle? Thanks!

they will send you the new model for what ever they are replacing, i.e if you have a PB they will send you a MBP in the closest config of you old Pb for instance if you had the mid range Pb they would send you a midrange MBP the MBP would be NEw in its oringal packaging you only have to send them back the defective unit

One thing to note though...

When replacing a unit they are going to replace the original configuration of the machine. So if you added a bigger hard drive or more ram and what not from third part sources. When my MBP was replaced they did not replace the extra gig of ram that I had thrown in.

Food for thought.

When they call you up and tell you they are replacing as opposed to fixing, mention the extra ram, they'll include it. they did on mine.

Thats great!

I just got a brand new C2D MB in its complete box after they kept botching my C1D MB Service. I got a new computer, Dual Layer superdrive, wireless n and a faster HD. Not to mention an extra remote and charger! They only asked for the unit back and gave me a whole new warranty for my basic 1 year.

I just added a 160 GB HD and will love it if they replace that if my comp needs to be replaced

So frequently a top of the line model will be a mid line model after they make the next speed boost. Do they go back and compare it to what it was at the time of purchase?

The beauty is the next mid line model still has crappy amounts of VRAM due to Apple's own anal market segmentation, so effectively they are forced to give you a new top of the line replacement as well :)
