....And 2nd question: what happens to iCloud file if device's file is changed/edited? Thanks!

1: file gets deleted on iCloud
2: iCloud version of file is updated to match local version

iCloud is a sync service, so it aims to match content across cloud and devices.

Whether original device or not, deleting the file on any device will delete it from iCloud and all devices syncing with it. You need to use "Remove Download" if you only want to delete the local copy.
Files are sync'ed so modifications without creating a duplicate will update everywhere

Thanks to both of you. Also, wondering: I don't see any indication of the presence of a "Documents" category (under "Finder -> Locations -> MacIntosh HD" or anywhere else I could find) on my resident 2-tb hard drive, whereas *all* of them are on the iCloud drive. Pardon my not recalling, but does this mean that when I set up iCloud Drive a few years ago I asked that created Documents go straight to iCloud and not also be created on my computer's own HD? Was this an option that can be chosen or not-chosen? Thanks again!

I've never used it, but that sounds like the System Settings -> Apple ID -> iCloud -> iCloud Drive -> Desktop & Documents Folders -setting. Apple's documentation doesn't explicitly say enabling it removes the regular on-device Documents folder, but looking closely at the image on that page the Documents folder is not listed under Favorites at least.

Per that page, if you disable the setting new (regular) Desktop and Documents folders are created on the Mac and the files remain on iCloud until you move them.
