I'm completely clueless when it comes to the iPhone, never had much interest in it until I saw the price drop to £169 in the UK. Now I'm thinking of buying one but is there anything I should know?

For instance, are there any versions that aren't as yet unlockable? If I buy one, do they try to make you sign up for a contract at the store or is it done through iTunes?

Can someone recommend a good iPhone website that explains all the ins and outs of the process please.

Much appreciated

All you wil have to do, is get the iPhone, take it home, Download pwnagtool, and follow the sticky at the top of the forum.

Enjoy!

If u purchase one through o2 even though u can take it home and unlock it you will be binded by a contract for 12 or 18 months..?

Yes and No… :D
If you buy one from O2 and sign up for a contract right there then yes, you will be bound for a minimum of 18 months.
But they cannot force you to sign up in store or on the online O2 store.

You are within rights to buy an iPhone and walk out with just the phone and no contract.
The activation happens via iTunes in any case…

Just to clarify...

1) Any iPhone you buy today will be unlockable.
2) If you use the Pwnage tool spoken about you will be able to 100% reverse the process.
3) You do not have to accept a contract in store, in fact I have bought 3 seperate phones from O2 and never have I been asked to sign anything. All the contract stuff is done through itunes.
4) The websites I use are -

Good luck and enjoy your new phone!:D

thanks for all your help guys. It's given me the confidence to go out and buy one - well, two actually. If I buy one my misses will want one too! :)

Wow really if this is true i am not happy! I was under the impression you had to buy on a contract? what do you say if they say how will you use the phone if its not on a contract?

And seen as though they are only £169 in the o2 stores and i have just payed for one through ebay for £220 which i haven't received i think i have been scammed i am gutted! Could of just went out an bought one straight away without being conned!:mad:

You mean you didn't know about O2's offer?
Crikey! Where have you been? It has been plastered all over the papers, billboards and busses…

Bad luck on your eBay purchase. :( The person you bought from probably bought it on O2's special offer…

No I didn't misundertsand. You bought and paid for an iPhone off eBay. You just haven't yet received the phone you bought. That is all. It has been I think 2 days? (You have a thread about it somewhere). Give it some time and hopefully it will all be good.

Thats said, you are still out of pocket. :(

Unlucky dude, hope it arrives for you soon!

This is why i always do research before making big money purchases, its the way of the world to screw you over.

well, it looks like that idea went out of the window!

I've just been to a carphone warehouse near where I work and they have none in stock. The guy said they're really hard to get hold of now and didn't think they'd be getting anymore. I then rang around a few other stores and they are all out of stock also!

Even the 02 website says the 8GB model is no longer available. :(

ah well, I'll just have to treat myself to a new lens for my camera instead!

Well i have just went to the o2 shop in town an bought one!

Been onto paypal and they are looking into the matter now and hopefully i should get a refund

I am trying to pwn it right now but i keep getting errors saying flashing failed etc..any idea anyone? I will restore with itunes now then try again can't seem to see the problem though?

Hi

i figured that a nice 100 quid of was worth it and so i gave up waiting for 3G, i just pwanged mine this very minute and it sounds as if you need to restore your iphone using the itunes button. (It happened to me).

Thanks

I would say if you always wanted an iPhone and you have NO intention of getting an O2 contract then buy one now as its really cheap and definately unlockable.

Lets not forget that even IF the new iPhone comes out in June it will have new hardware which may take weeks or months to jailbreak and/or unlock so unless your willing to start a new contract AND pay at least £269 for it OR buy it on your existing iPhone contract there is really no point in waiting for it.

As you would be waiting till its released AND then for it to be hacked and who knows how long that will take!

These £169 phones appear to be older stock and at 1.1.2 firmare. You need to do a restore in iTunes to get 1.1.4 on there first. Then pwnage will work.
