If I buy the 3G iPhone at an AT&T store, do I HAVE to sign up for the contract right away, there in the store? Or am I allowed to snag just the phone?
I'm wondering if I should go to the local AT&T store, or order it off the  website and wait for shipping. I don't have an  store within a 1 hour drive.

Oh! Looks like I'll be getting in line monday after the keynote! (if it goes on sale)

Can anybody else confirm this?

well assuming nothing changes of course....the standard procedure for the first gen was that the phone was activated through iTunes.

Good! I will have to wait for a proper unlock after I buy the phone, though. :(

Ok, I have a new question and I figured it would be better to just keep one topic open, rather than open a new one.

This question is about the subsidies. This is more of a question about subsidies in general and not just the iPhone subsidy. I am already on an AT&T plan, and my contract doesn't expire until December. I don't have an iPhone. Is there any way I can get the subsidy on the iPhone by just tacking on another two years to the end of my contract? Or would I have to start a fresh contract?
