I ordered an iPad 3G from apple.com on 06/06/10 so I could be grandfathered for the unlimited data plan. But the site says it won't ship until June 21 and won't arrive until June 24.

I just found the iPad that I ordered (3G 64 GB) @ Best Buy and I'm really tempted to buy it so I don't have to wait another 2 weeks...

Does anyone know how AT&T is handling the activation of the unlimited plans? Have they just extended the option to get the unlimited plan for everyone, or are they somehow able to tell if the specific iPad was purchased before or after 06/07/10?

Why wouldn't you just get the Best Buy iPad and cancel the online order if its the same model you want? Several people have reported that the unlimited plan is still available despite not being advertised anymore but I wouldn't wait too long.

3G order

I did the same - ordered on the 6th. Apple person told me I was now logged into the system with the order confirmation and that ATT would have me in their system.

All I need do is use the iPad to set up the unlimited plan.

So if you purchase at BBuy it might work but BBuy is not an easy place to return items too if need be.

Hope this helps!

I got my gf the ipad 3g monday night and the unlimited 3g plan was still an option , so looks like THAT isn't gone .

I just bought a 3G for my Dad yesterday and was able to activate on the unlimited plan. I think that you'd still be okay if you do it today.

Some people are confused about this because the unlimited option vanishes if you are already subscribed to unlimited. However, if you are a new subscriber it has still been available--probably only once.

Are there any new subscribers out there who, upon signing up for any data plan for the *first* time did not see the unlmited option? If so, then perhaps it really is gone.

[Edit] The unlimited plan is still being advertised on Apple's site so I think you're good to go:

I went for it. Bought the ipad 3g at best buy today, and the unlimited data was still offered!!

I bought my 3G 64GB iPad on 6/7 and activated the 3G service late this afternoon (6/11) and see the unlimited option still available. Keep in mind, you must keep renewing every month to maintain the unlimited plan. Once you stop and start up later, the option is gone. For my usage, I only needed 3G for this month and will not renew. Even if I start up later, 2GB is far more than I'll ever need.

I just purchased a 32GB 3G this morning and the unlimited option was offered and worked. This was purchased at BB. According to the BB employee these came in last night.

I'm guessing BB's order from Apple is the same as an individual purchase atleast to this system.

I ordered my iPad 3G a week or so ago. I picked it up on Thursday. I went through the activation process and all three options for data were available. Unlimited was actually pre-checked. I of course chose that option. Wife asked what I bought at AT&T on the debit card. I told her it was a case. LOL I love my iPad!!

I bought a 64GB 3G iPad yesterday at best buy and I was able to choose the unlimited data plan.

Just goes to show you how inconsistent the information given is.

apple web site states unlimited with astrisk: * Available if ordering iPad from the Apple Online Store by June 6

So today is the 12th and people are buying them and still getting unlimited seems a little bizarre to me, but hey thats great for them!

Hmm

Horsepoop, got my Unlimited plan activated about 2 hours ago.
The ipad was bought at an Apple Store yesterday. Very strange.
