M3 iPad’s at the earliest would be in Fall of 23 with the Pro refreshes, we will see hints architecturally in the iPhone 14 Pro‘s A16 variant this fall, as it will be on the new 3nm process and I want to say ARMv9 instead of 8, but Apple may have delayed that transition serprate from the move to 3nm. We wont know until this fall.

I really think Apple is working on a 12 inch MacBook Pro that will not compete in the Air line but be Apple's premium (Pro) ultraportable that want to pay pro prices for an ultraportable that has Mac OS rather than buying a 13 inch IPAD Pro. I can see a $1800-$200 12 inch MacBook Pro with a new generation Pro chip that will be slightly thicker than the Air to house a bigger battery for the mini led/promotion screen. I would assume it would have an M series Pro chip with MagSafe, dual monitor support, 1 usb c, and one audio output.

This will give premium (Pro) customers in apple's ecosystem an ultraportable option so they don't have to downgrade to IPAD OS or display/audio quality but want the best. I remember when the 12 inch MacBook came out, it had the best display at the time/usb c for 4k display support and a very premium build quality for business users on the go that had a MacBook Pro budget but valued portability.

1. apple was sending out surveys asking users about their interest in a 12 inch laptop
2. apple has already built a very premium MacBook Pro type device in the smallest form factor possible but usb c was so new that users weren't yet ready to accept dongle life in addition to low performing intel chipsets and horrible keyboards
3. It has been confirmed from various insiders that Apple is working on a 15 inch Air to compete with Microsoft 15 inch Surface line and an ultraportable Pro (premium) 12 inch notebook

This makes perfect sense since the 13.6 Air is already small enough for being the budget MacBook but some causal users want a little extra screen and don't have the $2200 budget

Additionally, some users that have a high end budget and want Promotion/Mini LED but don't like having a full sized laptop like the 14 inch MacBook Pro would spend the same amount of money on portability in a pro level device

Apple has split their product lines:

normal apple products/air for mass consumers/casual user base

pro level devices for professionals, wealthy people, etc. its essentially an ultra premium luxury line that have industry leading display, audio, build quality, and cpu performance at the premium/luxury level pricing

Iphone Pro $1000+
IPAD Pro $800+
MacBook Pro $2000+

Iphone $800
IPAD Air $600+
MacBook Air $1200 (assuming M1 is discontinued soon)

they also throw in a cheap iPhone SE $400 and IPAD $329 for children or to lure in frugal customers into their eco system, additionally this helps create value for consumers as they do not feel they are getting a low quality apple product

Don't the ipad pros with Magic keyboard make a 12 inch Macbook redundant?
Depends on what you prefer. Some people / (especially youtubers) find an iPad pro redundant when you can have a Macbook. It’s all dependant on what you want / need to do with it and what platform you prefer.

I’m definitely an iPad Pro fan and a MacBook (pro) ”hater”. I prefer to have a desktop computer at home and then a iPad pro at home since I find it a superior media consumption device and its an adequate companion for more work related stuff.

As for M3, fall 2023 at the very earliest, but more likely spring 2024, that is if they release M2 iPad Pro’s this year. cycle is usually 18 months with 12 months as the possible minimum.
Currently there is no software powerful enough that M1 can’t fully handle so it will be a few years before the chipset itself becomes a bottleneck on the iPad Pro.

and will it have 12gb ram on 512gb config?
Impossible to answer. The most optimistic would see the M2 iPad Pro in September this year, the M3 in June 2023 and the M3 iPad Pro in September 2023. But the M3 might arrive much later, so you might have to wait until 2024.

RAM is impossible to predict, most likely Apple will stick with 8GB for a few more years but at some point they’ll definitely make 16GB the minimum. If they do it for the Mac, they’ll most likely put the same chip in the iPad Pro.

imo iPad is an upgrade to Mac, in every aspect, so I am not interested in this ultraportable, only iPadPro 11” improvements. Hope Apple understands this as well.

ps. currently iPadPro has both better display and better speakers than the MacbookPro and actually substantially better, so not sure what you are talking about there.

if you want the best you should buy iPad not Mac, for many reasons - cameras, lidar, screen, speakers are much better and so on… not to mention touchscreen , and pen support + 5g

you are same as me - iPadAir/Pro + MacPro or other super powerfull desktop is the best of all worlds - and the supreme computing solution in all regards

ps. RAM is a bottleneck imo. 8gigs is not a lot, 16 would be perfect
+xdr, lets say. 8 gigs is perfect currently, but in the future will be a bottleneck

11" mac would be horrendous .i have a tab s7 with 11" by 16:10 ratio and it is atrocious

now if it has a different ratio, perhaps.but then youd get a super damn cramped kb ,pick your poison .apple won't release a 11 that's for sure

The speaker technology on iPad Pro models are pure sorcery and one of the reasons why I wouldn’t trade down to an Air or base iPad. It’s a severely overlooked feature.

Yesterday I my GF bought my 2017 10.5 iPad Pro off me. I gave her a demo of the speakers at max. I told her that they are better than the speakers on my 2020 16’ MBP. She said that the iPad Pro speakers are better than the ones on her dated flat screen TV🤣

I disagree with the iPad Pro being an upgrade to the Mac. The speakers on the 2021 14" and 16" Macbook pro are MUCH better than the 11" and 12.9" iPad Pro speakers. The latest macbook pros have more speakers and the speakers are bigger as well.

The 2021 14"&16" macbooks pros have better battery life(the 16" macbook has 21 hr battery rating on Apples website higher than the ipad pro), the SAME XDR with 120hz display tech as iPad Pro 12.9" but with macOS you can use thr full 1000nits anytime and you also get M1 Pro and M1 Max with 64 GB RAM.

The Macbooks also have more ports, connecting to more than 1 monitor and have better keyboards with function keys and also have bigger trackpads.

There is no way the ipad pro is an upgrade. Sure, the ipad pro has some better things but no way does the ipad pro have better speakers and display than the 2021 MacBooks Pros. The iPad Pro definitely has a better display and speakers compared to the M2 MacBook Air but the MacBook Air should be compared to thr iPad Air and when you do that the MacBook Air is better in almost every way.

Even the latest M2 Macbook air has a faster M2 chip compared to the ipad pro. So when it comes to speed the M2 MBA is faster.

I do agree the iPad Pro has 5g, touch and pencil support and better cameras but that is where the advantages end.

Did you guys even try the 2021 MacBook Pro 14" and 16" speakers??

I have them along with the iPad Pro and the 2021 MacBooks Pros just sound better and richer.

The 2021 MacBooks pros speakers are so good that Dave2D made a dedicated video about them.

wow....a tablet that grew off the OS from a cellphone is better than my 2021 MacBook Pro? I can't even create a basic pivot table on an IPAD hahahah

IPAD is getting closer and closer to being a laptop replacement but Apple wants IPAD to be an IPAD and they want a MacBook to be a MacBook.. after canonabolizing their IPOD line...the last thing Apple would do is give full functionality to the IPAD when docked to the magic keyboard or create a touchscreen Mac... they want their user base to have a smart phone, tablet, and a Mac... or in my case an iPhone 12 Pro, IPAD Air, MacBook Pro 14 inch, and MacBook Air...
