If I get iphone now, will I be eligable next yr for sum kind of subsidized price?

with the history of what ATT does at the times of the new iphone release in june, will they cut me a discount after 7-8 months into the contract??

Is it safe to expect an early upgrade price in exchange for an early renewal of the 2yr AT&T contract? Or was this something that was done this year for special circumstances?

I remember there was a lot of discussion around the subject when the new phones came out and as I recall not everyone was eligible for the mildly subsidized price (ie.$399 16g 3Gs). This was because they were not far enough into their ATT contract / or paid enough to them yet??

I got a 3Gs not too long ago and I would guess that I'll want the new one when it comes out. If I'm eligible for the early upgrade price and then sell my 3gs then the net out of pocket cost should be nominal. I've wondered about the mechanics of this transaction so let me know if there is a step/cost I'm missing.

It is doubtful for 3GS owners to get any kinda upgrade discount.
The same problems 3G owners faced this year.

October is too late for any subsidies next year.

I took so long to type my response/question that you posted this.

Looks like you're saying that the light-subsidy is only available for a short time right after the launch.

Those that spend in excess of $99 USD for the cell bill prior to taxes are eligible on ONLY their main line every 8-12 months. So if your bill is $99 or more, then you should be eligible - otherwise NO.

You also have business lines have different eligibilities too...

Very helpful, thanks.

I'm on a family plan with a FAN discount. My bill, before tax, is just over $100so based on what you said I'd be in good shape. I assume my bill will indicate which number is the 'main' line?

With my luck the requirement will rise to $125 next year and then I'll be out of luck.

You will be able to sell your used 3GS for what the new, unsubsidized phone costs.

wrong, has to be over $100 per line, not per family package. I was paying about $200 a month for a 2 iphone family plan after taxes...before only comes out to about $180 or so...basically I have the 1400 min fam plan with unlitmited txt msg added on, and I bought my 3G's on launch day, and I was not, and will not be eligible for the 3Gs until December. So I'm just going to wait the extra 6 mo and jump on the next one.

If you spend enough you can do almost anything :D My family plan with my wife (3000 mins, unlimited texting) is about $275/month with taxes and I get to upgrade every year on the dot. I think her line is 18 months though.

I bought the 3G within the first 2 weeks, and was even an earlier adopter upgrade to the 3GS. I expect the same thing to happen this year.
