at all inside the mini, could I boot to an external USB SSD properly setup for booting?

Seems like I could.

Super. Thanks. In that case my mini would make a good spare computer. I am getting the new iMac 5k, but am fearful if it has to go for repairs, as it is my main computer.

I'll keep an external SSD with a Carbon Copy Clone (bootable) and that plus the mini would be a quick way to get me back in business.
