I just have a question...
If i jailbreak my iphone3g will i lose the current information that is already on it?
i.e. my pics, music, and contacts?

Don't jailbreak your iPhone...in my honest opinion it is too risky...
What would you jailbreak the iPhone for anyway? What are you trying/planning to do once it is jailbroken?
Still not sure myself on what the benefits or perks of jailbreaking are yet. What exactly do people do it for anyway? What are the perks?

To load apps that Apple will not allow us to. For example, I want themes on my iPhone to customize the look of it as well as system sounds (lock, unlock, new mail, new SMS, etc). To facilitate this, I need OpenSSH installed or the ability to use Winterboard for theming. I also want MobileTerminal, StumblerPlus, etc.
in otherwords, jailbreaking allows you to do whatever you wish to the device, as you see fit.
Cycorder (video camera)
Backgrounder (run apps in the background, like IM)
You can change your themes (icons, background, UI sounds, text message and email sounds)
Depending on where you live, MMS
Copy and Paste
And no, there is no risk whatsoever if you do it properly.
OP, go ahead and JB; you don't lose anything and your backups are taken care of by iTunes backup. I recommend backApt app for backing up those JB apps as well. If need be, you can do a restore on your 3G iPhone and it will be returned to factory settings... Have fun!

As LSU stated, just make sure you do a full sync/backup before attempting to jailbreak. The backup should contain your call history, SMS messages, cameraroll photos (loaded photos will not be backed up but you can load again), email accounts, etc. After you jailbreak, you can restore from backup at which time your songs will resync, contacts, etc. Emails will redownload a certain amount of messages and if you use gmail, you'll need to enter your passwords for incoming and outgoing email again. You'll also need to re-enter any WiFi encryption keys for any wireless networks you saved to you device.

Has anyone ever jailbroken their iPhone and then taken it into the apple store for repair or a question. How would/did the apple geniuses' react when they saw what you did to the phone? As soon as you jailbreak it and they know...doesn't that void your warranty with apple?

Yes it technically voids the warranty, people simply restore their phone before seeking service.

So if you restore your iPhone 3g it will return to the normal Interface and such just like that?

Yes. Be sure to do a DFU restore though, since other restorations may not eliminate all traces.
It's OK. Lots of people are -- for some reason there are a ton of trolls who claim that it's risky or damaging. Unfortunately, misinformation abounds in the jailbreaking scene.
Except that Apple has officially declared All Jailbreak Illegal under DMCA and Copyright laws.

Depends what program you use to JB.
If you use PwnageTool you'll loose the data on the iPhone, which can be backed up beforehand.
If you use QuickPwn you wont loose anything.

I've seen people walk into the Apple Store and attempt to get Apple Genius' to work on their iPhone and they turn them away. I've also seen people get replacement iPhones that were JB, but b/c the issue didn't allow the Genius to detect the JB. It can go both ways; you can also restore it to factory settings and walk into another Apple Store.

I could sit here and explain why they didn't "declare all jailbreak illegal". I could point you to the actual legal brief, but I have a sneaking suspicion you wouldn't read it. I could explain the differences between creation of a derivative work for personal use and the distribution of a derivative work... but I have a feeling it's a lost cause. After all, you're the same guy who spent a good deal of time talking about how AT&T has a secret killswitch that can disable all jailbroken iPhones...
Not at all. Apple was responding to the EFF's recent request for a DMCA exception that would specifically protect jailbreaking and other similar processes. Apple doesn't want jailbreaking to be made explicitly legal, as this would obviously legitimize the process more than they'd like -- but that doesn't mean that they're trying to get it made illegal, just that they want to maintain the status quo.
The timing is kinda coincidental, but Apple's recent statement was in response to the EFF's request and has nothing to do with the release of Crackulo.us, despite what some misinformed bloggers have speculated.
you can change what the interface looks like, get paid apps for free and if you have a second gen ipod touch, you will find that it has bluetooth even though they say it doesnt
Sure changing the look is fine, changing sounds, etc. But please, PAY for your apps!
