iPad if I order iPad Air 13 engraved for Apple Store pick-up, where do they do the engraving?

if I order iPad Air 13 engraved for Apple Store pick-up, where do they do the engraving?

I always thought that it was engraved at the factory... however, if I try to place an order for Apple Store pick-up right now, it shows the engraved iPad will be available for pick-up on 5/28.(next Tuesday) If I choose shipping, then it shows delivery 5/27. Does this mean that someone at Apple warehouse or the store opens the box and takes the iPad out to engrave it?

I just placed an order on Apple's website. iPad Air 13-inch, purple, 256gb. Chose free engraving (my name + phone#). The order confirmation email shows pick-up at my local Apple Store on 5/28. Perhaps they will manufacture it and overnight it to the Apple Store? The Apple Store is almost 8000 miles from China.

How do you guys sell devices with engraving? I could never see myself doing that cause if I where to ever sell it or trade it in.

Apple trade-in will give the same value for an engraved device as one without engraving (but only if it was engraved by Apple). I don’t know about the third party sites, I only do Apple trade ins and I’ve never had an issue.
