Broken 5th gen iPad from 2017. Well, only the screen is broken. As in the glass panel.

Local repair shop quoted me at $110 for a screen replacement; found the same screen on eBay for $9 bucks.

Wondering if I replace the screen myself if the Touch ID fingerprint function will stop working. Not the end of the world but admittedly enjoy Touch ID.

There is a chance it will. First off, you might not know exactly how to transfer Touch ID button. And second, older devices like that definitely have the so-called hardware pairing feature that prevent non-OEM parts from functioning correctly. Third, you might break the device while trying to replace it. I learned the hard way some 13 years ago and always let professionals/trained people doing the job that I know can’t.

I have to agree here. $100 is a bit steep to pay to repair the screen for a 7 year old device, but it's still probably worth it over trying to do it yourself and risking something going wrong, depending on your level of experience / comfort.

So Im still not sure whether Touch ID will be deactivated by my replacing just the screen itself. Im not replacing the Home Button nor the Touch ID ring surrounding it...

..But of course the concern is unconnecting it may be a security feature.

I don't wanna pay $110 bucks when I can just do it myself for $9 and an hour.

The answer of that “deactivation“ is mostly true, especially since you won’t have the equipment to activate it properly. What’s worse, it might cause the home button function to stop working altogether when not installed Correctly.

If you have the skill to do this repair, then all good. Saves a lot of money in the process.

Highly likely, yes.
