I probably use these for an hour or 1.5 hours a day during my commute to work. Assuming I use these about 10 hours a week for 2 years straight, will my batteries barely hold a charge by year 3? I'm trying to determine if I should get AppleCare+ or not.

I don't know about the new ones, but my gen 1 AirPods are nearly spent after more than two years with a similar use case. I may have used them a little more than you, but not much.

The case still holds a charge reasonably, but both AirPods give me the low battery signal around 45 minutes. I can really only use one at a time at this point, unless I am sure my need will be shorter than that...

Really my only gripe with them. They are definitely disposable. I don't EVER get AppleCare, but am planning to on the next set.

YMMV

I hate that they are a consumable. My gen 1's are pretty much toast now too - only useful for 10-15 minute phone calls. I can't hike with them because they crap out after about 30 mins.

It has made me very reluctant to get another set, which a shame, because AirPods are one of the best products Apple makes. I probably will, but just the basic ones not the pros. If Apple treats them like something that is disposable then I will limit by investment too.

50+ hours a week for me on the APP. The 65ts (since launch) had similar usage before i got APP. No dent in batteries of 65ts.
I got AC+ for APP - no brainier if you ask me, and already after a month its being replaced under warranty (- wont charge or reset)
I am not sure how good APP will hold up for me.

I think it's more a case of the existing battery technology in a package this powerful and small. My Jaybirds lost significant battery capacity after 2 years as well.

24Hrs is the combined play time for a single charge, given that the charge dissipation on idle is minor - you can probably do the math.

I am ok with 2 years life on these, but annoying when I see battery getting worse everyday

Reality is, no one really knows how they will hold up. And since AC+ for AirPods is relatively new, no one really knows what Apple will do in terms of batteries on APP by year 2 and the end of AC+. If it is something you will continue to worry about, APP's may not be the right choice for you.
