...new SMS tones, I'm going to be very disappointed. I'm so tired of the default SMS tones, but I really don't feel like jailbreaking.

Hopefully they'll give us new ones or simply let us change them ourselves without resorting to hacking.

EDIT: Since nobody is talking about the original post, I might as well add: I also wish Apple would slim down the OS a little bit to make it more tolerable on the original iPhone and iPhone 3G, but that won't happen.

You still brag about being on 2.0 anyways, why do you care what 4.0 has?

I'm on 2.2.1 because I'm boycotting 3.0 (in my own mind). I'm just hoping 4.0 is better. Perhaps I'll finally upgrade my OS.

Horrors! You'll complain about the lag for sure then!!!

I'll only complain about the lag if there's lag in 4.0. Who knows, maybe Apple cleaned it up like Snow Leopard and made it faster across all devices. If it runs like 2.2.1 or faster, I'll love it.

If you're using a 3G phone, there will be lag given the fact that apple is adding multitasking in some form.

I'm gonna be seriously upset as well. I'm so sick of the tri-tone, and the others sounds sound like they're from a kids toy.

Just because it is multitasking capable doesn't mean you need to use it.

In general:
More functionality = More complex code
More complex code = Longer processing time

That's why they usually up the processing power of the phone to keep up with the complexity of the software.

Everybody here knows that TheSpaz will not be happy with 4.0 because it won't be fast enough, but you have to realize your running hardware that will be 2 years older then the software. You can't sit there and refuse to upgrade your hardware and then expect your brand new software to run as quickly as it does on the newest hardware.

I have a Motorola Razr that is pretty fast in my drawer. No lag time whatsoever. Would having that phone make you happy?

1. I already realize that I may have to keep running 2.2.1 to keep my phone fast.
2. I have a Razr, but I can't stand texting on it.

I guess I got used to Apple computers where it gets faster with each update. I know that Apple has the capability to make the OS fast on the old hardware, but they want you to upgrade to a new iPhone. The weird thing is, Apple still sells the iPhone 3G. Why wouldn't they want the software to run smoothly on both of them?

By the way... This thread was about SMS tones. I'm tired of the same old ones for 3 years in a row.

I dont think thats possible.
Simply the old hardware will not be able to handle the extra system resources needed to run 4.0 They cant even handle 3.0+ that well.
Im getting ready for your future rant threads after its released :D

The 3g won't be getting sweet fa.

If apple do there norm it's the 3g's turn to be left behind.

Eh, I've got the MGS Codec for my SMSes, it's pretty much amazing and I'm fine for now. I may boycott 4.0, just because I'm sick of tinkering with it. Bring on the JB for 3.2! :)

You know what's funny? The first few betas of 3.0 ran just as smooth as 2.2.1 on my iPhone 3G and it still had copy and paste and landscape and all that jazz, so don't fill me full of that crap.

As 3.0 got closer to final release, it got slower and slower and has stayed that way ever since.

I think you're just blinded. What do you know about the iPhone's system resources and having enough power to use them? Just because Apple didn't optimize 3.0 to run well on the 3G, you think it's an issue about not having the power to do it? I think it's more like... Apple pulling away from the 3G to push their new 3GS.

Did you use the first 3.0 betas? Just wondering because it seems like you don't know what you're talking about and you're just going by "what seems right in your head".

Lol :D
No matter what anyone says you will still choose not to comprehent how computer hardware and operating systems work. The only way to optimize it is to upgrade the hardware. You cant keep adding running processes and additional features to the OS and expect it to run the same way it did when less than half of that was included in the previous iPhone OS.
I know alot more than you in the computer science dept so its not what "seems right in my head" :D

A couple quick points I'll make about your statement here. I don't have the will power to go into details so here they are:

If they were pulling away from the 3G then why do they still sell it today?

Fixing bugs and loopholes in the OS can sometimes make code more complex, therefore slower (in reference to your theory about 3.0 betas)

Does it matter? We all know you'll be upset with a certain icon's shade or that there is a button one pixel over so you'll just complain about that instead.

Well, then you didn't use the first betas of 3.0 because those ran fine even with all the bells and whistles that you're still using today.

So again, stop filling me full of crap because I used every single 3.0 version that was made public to developers.

By the way... I just want new SMS messages. That's what the thread is about.

I appreciate that input, but I still think there's room for improvement. Perhaps they can improve 4.0's performance, but I doubt they'd want to do that at this stage.

Yeah, you're right. I should just accept Apple's sloppiness and embrace it instead of relying on the company that has made the most beautiful UI designs for OS X. Some of their new UI designers seem to be putting out more amateurish artwork lately. I can't ignore stuff like that because I'm in a similar field of work and I'm extremely sensitive to details. (but you already knew all of that).

Man, you guys really know how to start me up don't you?

SMS TONES!!!

You understand that betas are...betas right? As in, not finished.

Gee I wonder if anything is added from beta to final release

Yes but the first betas had bugs that weren't addressed in fixing these bugs it would cause the firmware to lag on the 3G. But i do agree with you about the fact apple are forgetting about their previous phones in the new firmware updates to kake you buy the newest model.

No, I didnt use any betas so I cant judge whether what you state is accurate or not. Not even if the betas included all bug fixes, stability issues and complete OS 3.0 features.
Judging by your posts and the language that you use though I can tell that your intelectual and intelligence level is very low. You cant even have a mature discussion without acting childish when someone disagrees with your point of view.

I disagree. They aren't forgetting about the previous phones. They are purposely getting people to upgrade so that they don't have to trim down the OS just so it will work on 3 year old technology. I think 95% of iPhone users agree that they would rather Apple build a phone with a lot more features rather then just adding a couple features so that the people still using the original iPhone can have their fun too. Think about what you guys are all asking for before you make these ridiculous statements. "I want multitasking, widgets, iChat but I want a better battery life and I want it to be even quicker then 3.0 on my previous generation phone."

I think they started 3.0 on the iPhone 3G, but when they started optimizing the code to execute on the iPhone 3GS, they left the iPhone 3G behind.

I'm just saying this: I *think* Apple has the *capability* to make an OS that will perform well on the iPhone 3G even with landscape and copy and paste, but they just didn't concentrate on making that happen because it's "old tech". Understand now?

PS: How about those new SMS tones eh?

I agree, but I didn't ask for a lot of the features that we got in 3.0. I'm not asking Apple to make my old crappy hardware run like new because I can already do that by using 2.2.1. It just sucks that the iPhone 3G had such a shorter life than the original iPhone. The original iPhone got a nice upgrade because they didn't change the processor or RAM in the iPhone 3G for 2.0. Then, the iPhone 3GS comes out and BOOM, the iPhone 3G is slow automatically (if you upgraded the software). This also allowed the developers to make their games use more RAM and graphics because the people who bought iPhone 3GS wouldn't have a problem running them while the iPhone 3G gets left in the dust with super slow framerates and laggy overall OS.
