Food for thought for the folks complaining about no camera, no flash and no multi-tasking. If you were in the market for a portable device (either tablet or laptop) but wanted to spend no more than $500, what else would you buy besides the iPad? This is the situation I'm in. My only computer is a Mac mini but I need a portable device for when my wife and myself travel (we're both retired). I tried the netbook route and really didn't like the Asus I bought so I returned it. Talk about flash not working - I couldn't get any of the flash based video services to play any shows at all. iTunes was terrible on it also. In general it was under powered, had a small keyboard and a small screen. I returned it and said no more netbooks. Yes, I could go the Microsoft laptop route, but I just got my Mac last year and really don't want to return to Microsoft ever again. I just like the security of my Mac and iPhone as far as it working smoothly with no problems to complain about. Finally, I just refuse to pay $1000 for a white MB or even $800 or so for a used or refurb. So tell me, what else is there left for me to get except the iPad? Thank goodness none of the things that folks are complaining about bother me at all.

I will continue to use my HP mini netbook dual boot with Windows and Jolicloud on it. I may get a kindle but at this point the books I have been interested in are not available as ebooks.

I will consider an iPad once its jailbroken.

You can get a Joojoo for that price. All this negativity regarding the iPad will probably make me get the Joojoo instead.

False: I will be getting an iPad.

So... were all idiots for buying the iPad because it has no camera, no flash, and no multitasking. That seems to be the general verdict, but I'm sorry if anyone buys a Joo Joo which is nothing more than a web browser for the same cash? lol wow

When it was the CrunchPad at $149 to $199 I thought this maybe something to check out, they realize they can't produce even a basic browsing device under $499, Ok then. I'll take my chances on the iPad. :)

Joo Joo is the stuff you need to be smoking prior to placing that order! :p

I guess I will reveal the little joke/sarcasm. I was just surprised that no one has brought this up yet. For me, the iPad perfectly suits my needs but I guess some people do not see the value of it until you see the competition like the Joojoo.

:) I figured as much and wasn't trying to point it as you think people are idiots, just taking advantage of the mention of the Joo Joo :) I honestly did follow it for some time when it was the $149 Crunchpad. Just was a bit shocked reading that it is now 500 bucks!

Get a iPhone 3G-S

I already have one. But it's kind of hard to compose long emails or post to message boards when traveling with the small keyboard.

The point of starting this thread was, yes the iPad may have some shortcomings in some folks eyes (not mine); but if you're looking for a portable device in the $500 range and want something bigger than a smart phone and don't want a Microsoft products, the iPad is the only game in town. So there is no need to keep complaining about any perceived shortcomings, right now it's all we got and I can't wait to buy one.

$500 is the hard target, and you don't get much of an iPad for that either. Throw TAX and shipping and a few accessories into the mix and you'll still only have a 16gb device with $600 and up spent.

There is the Archos 9 tablet ($549) running windows 7 starter with a 60gb hard drive in it, but it really needs SSD and a better verison Windows to be polished, and that will push it over $800.

Anythingbutipod.com is a thread called anthingbutipad where several tablets are mentioned. You might want to check it out.

The iPad won't really be available for a couple of months, and that's true for many of the competitors. Check back then, and the tablet world will be a very different place.
