If not Sony, what then?

I had Geek Squad come to my house to replace the optical block on my 50 inch Sony SXRD because it was giving off a yellowish cast/tint on the screen but it turns out they have to order the part. He said that because Sony doesn't make this model anymore, it may be difficult even ordering the part now but since I had the 4 year warranty, I could go to Best Buy and pick out a TV comparable to the one I have now.

So my question is: what should I get if I can get something other than Sony???? I definitely want 1080P and something around the 42-46 inch range. LG and Samsung seem to get good reviews so I was thinking about one of those but I wondered what others thought.
 
Your best bet for home theater advice, in my opinion, is AVS forum. It can be a daunting task, but it's well worth it.

If you're talking LCD, the consensus seems to be that Sony and Samsung are the top brands, with maybe Toshiba. Samsung tends to be more affordable than Sony and Toshiba sets seem to be harder to find. When I was doing research a year ago, I got the impression that LG was overpriced. If I had decided to get an LCD set, I probably would have bought a Samsung.
 
Yeah. Samsung is better than the other two. LG has lots of problems. And Sony is a little expensive.
 
Happy with Samsung

+1 for Samsung.

Very happy with my year and half old Samsung FP-T5084 50" plasma. We also have a pair of older 720p LCDs (32" and 40") that have performed great. As far as value, don't think you get better bang for the buck than with Samsung. There are better performers (some Pioneer and Panasonic sets come to mind) but you certainly pay for it. Just my $0.02.
 
Awesome well it looks like Samsung is pulling ahead for me...unless some of the other brand owners speak up.

I'd be hooking my PS3 and AppleTV, (which I am obsessed with), to it as well.

My hopes are that the guy can't order the part and I'll be free to choose something in the same price range but this whole things seems all too good to be true.
 
Try to find a Samsung LE-46A789 (that at least is the european name) LED backlight with local dimming. I have a comparable 40" set and it is a very good TV.
 
LG's new LH90 series seem promising, offering local dimming, correct color and luminance settings (THX Display Certification), 240 Hz with motion interpolation, and pretty good price. It's available in 55" (55LH90, $2600-3200), 47" (47LH90, $1900-2400), and 42" (42LH90 $1500-1900). It just started shipping, so availability may be limited.
 
You can't go wrong with a Sony! I have two Sony LCD's in my house and I'm very happy with them. One is a low end 32" 720p M series, and the other is a 40" XBR6 series. My XBR6 is just amazing, granted they replaced it with a next model, which is now the XBR9 series, it's absolutely amazing.

I watch normal TV, do hidef gaming from my PS3, and I like to watch Bluray movies as well.

Best Buy currently has their XBR9 series TV's on sale for quite a bargain. Here's some links:

Samsung makes some very nice sets.

LG is one of the largest makers of glass and sets. they work witha lot of other companies as a supplier for parts and rebadged units.

I don't think you can go wrong with either if you get a mid to high level set. My recommedation to ensure you get what you really like is to visit a couple other stores with the same set oro similar sets just to be sure you see the picture in various settings.

Stay with at leas a 50" you may regret going smaller.
 
If you really want to select the best TV for your circumstance, I really do recommend you put in some serious time over at AVS forum researching this. It will be daunting at first, but there is no better place to get smart on this stuff (face it, MacRumors is great for Mac related stuff, but it's really not a home theater forum).
 
Another vote for Samsung. I have both a Bravia and a Samsung and the samsung trashes my sony as far as picture quality an contrast.

I have the Samsung 850 series and enjoy it.
