I'm curious. When folks trade in an iMac that has maxed out RAM installed by the owner, does the owner restore the amount of RAM the iMac shipped with? For example, my iMac was purchased new with 16GB RAM. Over the years I slowly added more RAM and it now has 64GB. If I trade it in for a new iMac, do I remove all but 16GB of RAM before trading in, or do I remove ALL the RAM, or do leave all 64GB in the machine?

If you can use the RAM in another machine keep it, unless you included that fact when getting a trade-in quote.
When I go to the Apple site and go through the motions of getting a quote, it never asks for the RAM amount. It does ask for the serial number; so, I assume they will be expecting the amount of RAM that shipped with the machine. I'm not sure.

You won't get more money leaving extra RAM inside the machine. Unless you can use it, leave it in if you want to follow through with the trade-in.

Ok my question still isn't answered. Leave which amount in? It came with 16GB and I added more for a total of 64GB. Leave 16GB in?

Are you using Apple's trade in? The one where you type in the serial number? Then they'll expect it to have the RAM that it was bought with, so to answer your question, 16GB. But I don't think they'll do anything if you leave the 64GB in but like Apple_Robert said, it won't make them give you more $ either unless you're using a 3rd party seller like Ebay where having the 64GB of ram will affect the sale price.

Yep, they only expect 16GB. I'd just take the extra RAM out and sell it on eBay.

Of course, I'd just sell the whole computer on Craigslist or OfferUp. As you'll get more money, cash, in person. Plus not have to deal with Apple's trade in partner, Phobio. Who might cut the quote in a quarter because they found a blemish. There's plenty of horror stories here about Phobio.

Ok got it. Thanks.

I'm not trading in yet. I'm planning for the future. I think my current iMac will outperform the new iMac. I'm not sure. If the new iMac outperforms my iMac, then the M1 is one hell of a chip.

Hi coolbreeze2,

Thank you for reaching out to inquire about the parameters of the trade-in program at Phobio. As it turns out, our trade-in values are based on the original specifications of the device. This means that we provide values based on the specs that are attached to your serial number. If you have any further questions, you may contact me directly at ArthurA@phobio.com. I am more than happy to assist.

Thanks,
Arthur with Phobio Support
