All,

Like several users here, I have had issues with my 16" MacBook Pro in clamshell mode with my CalDigit TS3+ while using multiple (in my case, four 30” Apple Cinema Displays) monitors. Essentially, what I am seeing is that if I put the displays to sleep (I use hot corners) for more than about 7 seconds, the MacBook Pro will not wake the displays up. If I wake the displays before about 7 seconds, they will wake just fine.

I did not have this problem with either of my 15" 2018 or 2019 MacBook Pros.

Today, I ran a test which provides a new, albeit impermanent, solution to the problem.

After putting the displays to sleep (for about 3 hours in my case), once again the displays would not wake. When I lifted the cover to my 16" MacBook Pro, all of the display windows that were normally spread across four displays, were grouped (as they always are) on my MacBook Pro LCD. Leaving the MacBook Pro display open (not in clamshell mode), I removed power to the TS3+ for about two seconds, and then reapplied power.

All four of my 30” Apple Cinema Displays came back to life, and all of the program windows were back to being normally distributed across all four displays.

I closed my MacBook Pro display and entered back into clamshell mode, and everything continued to be displayed across all four 30” Apple Cinema Displays.

Then I put the displays to sleep longer than 7 seconds so that they would not wake, and this time, I left the MacBook Pro in clamshell mode and removed power to the Caldigit TS3+ for about two seconds, and then reapplied power.

All four of my 30” Apple Cinema Displays came back to life, and all of the program windows were back to being normally distributed across all four displays.

So... we have two more datum. I am still unsure if the issue is with the TS3+, the MacBook Pro, or a combination of the two.

I would be interested if someone who has a similar problem with a 16" MacBook Pro, multiple monitors, and a TS3+ could run the same tests as outlined above and report back here whether or not their results are the same as mine. If they are, I will contact Apple engineering and give them the information to assist them in troubleshooting. I will also contact Caldigit with the information.

Merry Christmas (or whatever holiday you celebrate) everyone!

Joe

All,

Like several users here, I have had issues with my 16" MacBook Pro in clamshell mode with my CalDigit TS3+ while using multiple (in my case, four 31" Apple Cinema Displays) monitors. Essentially, what I am seeing is that if I put the displays to sleep (I use hot corners) for more than about 7 seconds, the MacBook Pro will not wake the displays up. Apple never sold a 31” Cinema Display. Do you have the old 30” model that was all silver and used a dual-link DVI input, or do you have the newer 27” Cinema Display with Mini DisplayPort input?

I do not know if this helps but I have had problems with the TS3+ and the 16” with nothing connected to the TS3+. It seem there is some issue when the MBP tries to ”wake” the TS3+ after sleeping.

In this case I had this problem also with my 2016 15” and in Mojave, I believe the TS3+ is the culprit and there is nothing we can do if CalDigit does not update their firmware.

Hello Joe, I just got the 16” macbook pro and got the Caldigit TS3+ and have the same issues. It was fine for the first week but now when waking up the external monitor doesn’t react. I’ve been trying to troubleshoot it and think that it’s the Caldigit, probably firmware. I also tried the Caldigit with a 2016 Macbook Pro and it doesn’t have the problem. What have you done after 4 months? Does any one else have this issue? Thanks!

Chiming in same issues (single monitor) but same issue as far as Waking up from sleep. I constantly need to unplug the cable from the MacBook 16" and plug it back, then my display turns on again. Sometimes I have the kernel panic and see the system had rebooted itself. . Mostly though its just the annoyance of needing toe cycle the usb-c cable to get things moving again

Does anyone have a solution for this?
I’m having the same issue with my MBP 16” and dual monitors connected with my CalDigit TS3 Plus.
I have no problem when using with the single monitor, but with the two monitors connected to the dock, my MBP doesn’t wake up from sleep mode by pressing the keyboard or clicking the trackpad.
My MBP only wakes up when I open the lid and then press the power button.

I have a CalDigit T3+ with MacBook Pro16 2019 and I am not able to use two monitors. Only one works at one time. Both connected (Display Port and USB C to HDMI) but display is on the one that gets powered on first or connected first. Second one does not get any signal. Does not matter which port they are connected to. It used to work before.
