All,
Like several users here, I have had issues with my 16" MacBook Pro in clamshell mode with my CalDigit TS3+ while using multiple (in my case, four 30” Apple Cinema Displays) monitors. Essentially, what I am seeing is that if I put the displays to sleep (I use hot corners) for more than about 7 seconds, the MacBook Pro will not wake the displays up. If I wake the displays before about 7 seconds, they will wake just fine.
I did not have this problem with either of my 15" 2018 or 2019 MacBook Pros.
Today, I ran a test which provides a new, albeit impermanent, solution to the problem.
After putting the displays to sleep (for about 3 hours in my case), once again the displays would not wake. When I lifted the cover to my 16" MacBook Pro, all of the display windows that were normally spread across four displays, were grouped (as they always are) on my MacBook Pro LCD. Leaving the MacBook Pro display open (not in clamshell mode), I removed power to the TS3+ for about two seconds, and then reapplied power.
All four of my 30” Apple Cinema Displays came back to life, and all of the program windows were back to being normally distributed across all four displays.
I closed my MacBook Pro display and entered back into clamshell mode, and everything continued to be displayed across all four 30” Apple Cinema Displays.
Then I put the displays to sleep longer than 7 seconds so that they would not wake, and this time, I left the MacBook Pro in clamshell mode and removed power to the Caldigit TS3+ for about two seconds, and then reapplied power.
All four of my 30” Apple Cinema Displays came back to life, and all of the program windows were back to being normally distributed across all four displays.
So... we have two more datum. I am still unsure if the issue is with the TS3+, the MacBook Pro, or a combination of the two.
I would be interested if someone who has a similar problem with a 16" MacBook Pro, multiple monitors, and a TS3+ could run the same tests as outlined above and report back here whether or not their results are the same as mine. If they are, I will contact Apple engineering and give them the information to assist them in troubleshooting. I will also contact Caldigit with the information.
Merry Christmas (or whatever holiday you celebrate) everyone!
Joe
