If you completely trash/break your iPhone, can you buy a new one at the discounted price or will you have to chough up full price?

full price. the prices on AT&T and Apple are for new contracts or extending a contract.

Maybe it's me, but that doesn't make sense. Doesn't that last part apply to everyone?

I believe so.
People breaking their iPhones or maybe phones in general have to pay the full price in order to discourage those buying more than one in order to sell them, pretty much like what was happening before July08, and trying to teach the ones not being careful a little lesson.

Bull. You pay full price because thats what they want to charge.

It would be nice if AT&T would offer a extended warranty like they do on other phones. I would hate to get 6 months into owning a iPhone and then drop it and have to shell out full price for a new one.

You can get a really good warranty from Square Trade but I think you have only 30 days to purchase it.

I do know that lost or replaced phones cost 499 for the 16gb....that does extend your contract...599 if you want to keep the same date.

I wonder what happened to the deal where if you brought in your broken phone they would replace it for 250....they must have stopped doing that..

Wonder when you can buy a refurb?

My fiance's iPhone got destroyed beyond fixable (ran over by a car and left in the rain, long story). I called AT&T and they said $399 for a new one, but Apple said they would replace it at the subsidized price of $199. Needless to say we went straight to the Apple store, gave them the broken one, and walked out with a new iPhone for $199.

did you have to extend your contract?

Everyone is giving you wrong information. I know from first hand that it is wrong, as I experienced over Thanksgiving holiday.

My phone broke last Saturday (3G 16GB iPhone). I went to Apple and got a new one for the 299 dollar price. I didn't need to show my broken phone, just gave him the info on my AT&T account, he verified it, and then activated my phone in the Apple store.

Got any questions.. shoot me a message.

EDIT: So to answer your question in full, you will pay the discounted (subsidized) price that you see advertised in the commercials. Don't worry, you wont pay the full price.. just 199 or 299, for the 8gig and 16gig, respectively.

You should rethink when people are giving 'wrong' information. I replaced my 3G phone at an AT&T store and had to pay full price, $499. Sounds like Apple isn't playing by the rules or some people are getting lucky...

wrong, you will pay retail price for the phone as thats policy PERIOD. you may have lucked out by having a worker not too sure what they were suppose to do

i mean think why they have a retail price anyways? you sure as heck cant buy the iphone without a contract so that retail price is there soley for people that lose/break/whatever their phone and arent eligible for a new subsidized phone

This is a policy that was explained to me by an Apple genius. Keep in mind, they all receive training at Apple Headquarters in Cupertino, CA, so they know what they are talking about.

Essentially what he said was that if you:

a. Make an appointment at the genius bar
b. Can successfully show that the phone has damage from handling or any other user-caused problems

... then they will give it to you at the 199/299 price point.

And to negate the statement that I "had an employee that had no idea what they were doing," this was a very knowledgeable genius, in fact the other geniuses kept asking him questions regarding different policies.

Secondly, my friend that lives in new year had his replaced for 299 dollars and another friend had this done at the same store as myself.

I spilled a beer on my friends white 16gig 3g and we had to pay $499 to have it replaced. However the water damaged white iphone still sold for over 500 on ebay.. somehow..

anyway it was quite the adventure

From what they told me, if you damage your phone it will be the contract price . But if it has any water damage you have to pay the full price.

well i phoned my local apple store and said i dropped my 3g and the whole screen shattered and it wont turn on. She said bring it on by and someone can help you right away. So i asked how much will a replacement cost? She said $299 for the 8gig and $399 for the 16gig (this is canadian)

I phoned for the hell of it just to see what they would say
