I've been playing with the iPad for a day now and its ridiculous how much i'm enjoying it.

Anyways. Straight to the point:

If there was only one iPad app to recommend to someone, which would be yours?

I myself haven't purchased an paid apps yet, though the HD racing games and the XE elements app looks pretty sweet.

As for the free ones i've download I'm really enjoying the NPR app. I can read interesting news stories and listen to their music at the same time. I love it.

Yours?

Worms HD is probably my best paid app out of the 10 or so I've purchased so far. Of the free apps it would have to be Netflix.

Netflix and the abc apps are essential but I would have to say game wise that mirrors edge win it. Having minigore at close second.

Mirrors edge is a phenomenal game with gorgeous graphics. My review is on the app store!

I have to second this. Mirrors Edge is pricey but totally worth the price. The graphics and controls are amazing.

I would also suggest Real Racing HD and X Plane 9.

Not counting the built-in apps or iBooks (which isn't built in but is essentially automatic), I would probably also say Netflix. When Sling Player comes out for iPad, that is going to be the killer app for me. Will be awesome to watch anything on my TiVo and baseball games from home while on the road.

Free Apps: USA Today is nice. Others have mentioned iBooks already.

Paid Apps: Only bought 3 so far. Plants Vs Zombies is awesome. $10 and it's worth every penny. Flight Control is also great. Musical Piano is a really fun piano fun toy.

Only one? I'm enjoying Castlecraft the most. Otherwise, Beatwave, Pages and Netflix. I also find the USA Today app very impressive.
