iPod If you had a kid who wanted an iPod touch...

What options would you truly have at this point? I’m assuming with the time since the last release, updates are almost obsolete and games wouldn’t truly function.

Of course I could be VERY wrong, but I’m wondering how practical purchasing an iPod touch is at this point.
 
If you are talking about just music, the iPod Touch is worth it, as the music app is much better than the music app on the iPhone.

But, if you are talking about other apps and games, you might better off buying an iPhone. You can get some decent deals on older ones.

You don't need to have a phone plan to use an iPhone. When my children were younger, I would give them my old iPhones to use a iPods.

I definitely considered this, although I’m thinking the older phones that would be in the right price range would likely also be too old to update enough to play the apps well.

Obviously depends on your budget. But an iPhone SE is very adequate.
 
I would say a used iPhone SE or 6S would be a good option. They can be had under $200 now though I’d go with at least 32GB or 64GB if they plan on installing lots of games and media. Might bump up the price a little but worth it.

Much better A9 CPU and 2X the RAM. Plus better camera by a long shot. And can be used as a phone later down the line if they ever needed it.

But mostly a much better chipset for the money. And longer support as well. Not sure how iOS 13 will handle on 1Gb RAM devices, if at all.
 
I would go with the iPod. Phone radiation is too significant for kids IMO.
 
6th Gen iPod Touch is a much nicer device to hold than an SE, should be cheap second hand too.

SE is faster and has way better battery life though.
 
I have a nearly new 128G Touch 6. I use it mainly as a portable stereo recorder with a Shure MV88 or Zoom iQ5. 14+ hours of play but not nearly so much record time due to the slight power required to power the microphones.

When I retired my 128G iPhone 7+ in favor of an XS, my first thought was, “At last, an iPod with truly decent battery life.”

It’s so much larger that I may keep the T6 as it + a microphone slips easily ito a shirt pocket.

If I sell the Touch, I’ll also sell the Shure. The MV88 does not have a headphone jack unlike the Zoom stereo mics.
