For some reason Powershot needs to be plugged into the USB port on MacBook Pro twice to transfer photos. The first time it charges and the second it is ready for transfer. Is this a Canon thing? A Powershot thing? Vixia Camcorder does not do this but transfers video right away. MacBook Pro is slow at charging so I always use the Canon Power adaptor to charge the battery anyways. Anyone else experienced this? I wish there was a way to turn that off so Powershot would transfer photos right away.

I have a Canon Eos M10, connect with USB and download with Image Capture.
Connects first time.

My camera can't be charged by USB (only with the battery charger), maybe this is why your having issues.
Is there not a specific data port for transferring images?

Well my Vixia connects and transfers the first time so perhaps this is a Powershot thing.

Looked in the manual and it says Powershot can be charged via USB so perhaps this is a intentional feature on Canons end.

Better way:
Get a USB card reader, and use it.
I have no reason to spend money on this when I don’t need one. On my vacation last week I took 100 pictures which took less than 5 mins to transfer to Mac.

I was going to buy a card reader but changed my mind. Don’t need one.

Agreed, too much wear and tear taking the card out all the time.

Especially when I don’t take pictures all the time. Yesterday took a trip to Garden of the gods and shot 5 pics with Powershot and 2 videos with Vixia.

Plan to go to Rocky Mountain Park this week sometime and will probably shoot up to 20 pics with Powershot and less than 10 videos with Vixia. I use Vixia over Powershot for video since it has more features and a better zoom.

I have never had a USB plug fail on me in all my life. There is always a first time however. But If it fails I will just get it repaired simple solutions.
Or save the money on the repairs and use a card reader.

I understand the oddity of having to plug it in twice, and that becomes annoying, but if you’re using your camera so infrequently does it even matter? A few solutions on how to get around this have been proposed with card readers but you don’t want to spend $10 on a reader and would rather risk damaging the USB plug and paying many times that to get it repaired (which would not be worth it on the cost of the camera you’re using).

I don't think you are supposed to have to plug the cord in twice; I'd be concerned that the USB connection is already going bad. ...
I was thinking the same thing.

I suggest trying a different USB cable, too. Sometimes those go bad, or intermittent.
