So Im getting very tempted to unlock to use on Tmo, but the 1 thing holding me back are the hacks/file modding to get Tzones to work. Just not comfortable diddling around with all that. If you just pay for the $20 unlimited data with Tmo do you still need to do all that?

No you do not, you just need to add the correct edge settings and it will work, no user name and password, and internet2.voicestream.com for the APN field.

But do you still have to install something? Or under Network settings will there be an Edge setting once the Tmobile sim is in?

no installing anything, just change the settings under Settings->General->Network->Edge

APN: wap.voicestream.com
Username: (blank)
Password: (Blank)

there is an app which saves your apn address so you don't have to keep retyping it. I forget what its called. its in the installer app.

Ok, currently under Settings->General->Network I have nothing that says Edge. When my phone in unlocked with a Tmo sim card and an internet plan added on will the Edge option just appear?

Also, is the add on I want the T-Mobile Total Internet Add-on?

if you dont have that app, how often do you have to keep retyping that info in?

internet2.voicestream.com for the APN field.

Well thats conflicting info. Just realized the previous poster said to type that into the APN field. I thought the wap.voicestream.com was for the 5.99 Tzones plan?

Even if you have the T-Mo $19.99 plan, there is no guarantee EDGE (internet) will work even if you have an "E" on the display of the iPhone.

You need to install the Community Sources package from the installer, and then install the T-Zones 1.1.3 fix package from Big Boss. It takes less than a minute to do this.

With T-Zones $5.99 plan, the APN is wap.voicestream.com

Ay caramba. It just never ends. There is SOOOO much mis-information I dont know who or what is right. Im not saying your info is incorrect, but its just conflicts with what others have said. They said nothing to install, you say that something needs installing.

Do you have a step-by-step process for this?? Im on a Mac. That also seems to be a large part of the problem. Some ppl say do "this or that" but they use windows, and there is a different method for Mac users. I see in your sig you are a Mac user though.

Maybe I shouldl just forget about trying to get on with Tmo and just stick with ATT when my Tmo contract is up.

I use T-Mobile, I also use T-Zones ($5.99 Internet plan).

I have not tried using Total Internet, I am giving T-Zones a try for a month to see if it meets my needs.

T-Zones:
Price - $5.99
APN - wap.voicestream.com
NO username or password
Hacks - Must use a hack to get this to work. I used BigBoss's T-Zones hack from the installer.app.
Notes - This is working great for me so far, speed is under 90 kbps, and I don't know if Total Internet would be faster, I might switch to it if it is.

Total Internet:
Price - $19.99
APN - internet2.voicestream.com
NO username and password
Hacks - NO HACKS
Notes - You get the same internet as T-Zones, but you must hack your phone with T-Zones to make it go through a proxy. Going through this proxy might make it significantly slower, might not.

Big Voodoo Daddy:

I had a 1.1.1 iphone, and then I had to do all those Yecky things to get it to work.

When I got my 1.1.3 OOTB 16 gigger, this is what I did:

1) Activate, jbreak, unlock via ZiPhone.
2) Install BSD Subsystems, SSH
3) Installed "TMobile Carrier Logo" ver 1.1 from Tweaks 1.1.3

That was it- the 5.99 tZones works GREAT!

Don't be so worried- its easy and it works!

sounds simple, but where do you get the BDS subsystem and ssh to install? Is that part of ziphone? I saw in another thread you mentioned Tweaks but Im telling you this is all a foreign language to me, I have no clue where to get that stuff.

BSD Subsystem and OpenSSH is in the installer application icon on your iPhone that you will see after running ZiPhone 2.5. The first time running installer, you may see errors. Be patient and ensure you have a wifi network connectivitiy and then completely shut down your iPhone by holding the top button for a few seconds and then slide click to shut down. Power back up again, wait for wifi connectivity and then run the installer and it will down load its packages.

You will need to download the following from the installer:
1. BSD Subsystem
2. OpenSSH
Restart your iPhone by powering down/up then download from installer:
3. Community Sources
4. T-Mobile Carrier Logo
5. T-Zones 1.1.3 fix package from Big Boss

It takes just a few minutes to do this. Its easy, give it a try and good luck.

I use T-Mobile's BlackBerry plan, works great with no workarounds.
If you're using the BlackBerry data plan, then put in wap.voicestream.com as the APN with the other fields blank. If you're using the Total Internet plan, then put in internet2.voicestream.com and with the other fields blank. Both will work fine without workarounds.

Worth noting that YouTube won't work if you're using the T-Zones plan.

By putting wap.voicestream.com in the APN manually is the same as installing it from the Tweaks folder 1.1.3 after installing the community sources.

Except that the Tweaks install also puts a cute little T-Mo graphic up in the carrier space at the top left! :D That is worth the price of admission! I love showing that off at the ATT store!

No no no. I'm using the $20 Unlimited Internet plan with T-Mobile myself.

I added internet2.voicestream.com. Not wap. Works great.

While we're on this topic, I just wondered if anyone else who has the Total Internet plan has used wap.voicestream.com instead of internet2.... and noticed it seems actually faster? I noticed it on my own iPhone (I tried it with wap instead of internet2 just for the heck of it) and then did a side-by-side comparison test with my partner's iPhone when he got it the day after I did. The one set up with wap just kicked the other iPhone's butt. Weird, eh?

What kind of speeds are you getting with total internet? with T-Zones i am getting around 90 kbps, and if total internet is much faster then I might think about upgrading.

www.iphonenetworktest.com

Using the link you just gave, I just obtained an average of 184.4kbps (from 3 tests in a row) while using wap.voicestream.com and an average of 181.6kbps with APN set to internet2.voicestream.com (keep in mind, I'm signed up and paying for Total Internet). So, either APN works and remarkably WAP seems ever so slightly faster. Weird. :)

But if you don't mind paying more, it may be worth upgrading to Total Internet versus T-Zones.

I've used the Total Internet plan and the T-Zones plan and the Total Internet is clearly faster, in my experience. It's not even close. T-Zones works, but it's much slower... but at almost 1/4 of the price, its worth it IMO.

Yeah, I'm sure the more expensive plan is much faster (hence the reason I have it). I just found it interesting how using the APN for the slower plan (while paying for the faster plan) is a bit speedier than the Total Internet APN. One of life's little mysteries I guess :)

Just an FYI on this. I have debated back and forth about trying this. Should I try to stay with Tmobile? Should I say forget it and stick with ATT?

Well today I took a chance and ran ziphone. Unlock went as easy as anything. Popped in my Tmobile sim, able to make calls. Logged into my tmobile account and added the unlimited internet plan for 19.99, rebooted phone and it worked straight away. Only thing I cant get to work is youtube on edge. Yes, I tried the patch but still nothing. Everything else (maps, locate me works fine)

YouTube works on EDGE for me I used no hacks, so I don't know what your problem might be.

same here, might want to restore and try it again

i'm on 1.1.4 with t mobile with the $20 unlimited internet plan.
youtube works
edge works
email works
maps (locate me) works

the one thing that will never work is visual voicemail

my EDGE settings:
APN: wap.voicestream.com
Username:
Password:

it'll still work but some websites will automatically redirect you to the mobile version of that page with this APN.

example: you type google.com into safari, it'll redirect you to google.com/mobile
