Would you morally feel bad? Seem like kind of not respect how someone chooses a model of iPad for you. This actually kind of happens to me twice just not exactly ipad.

Well, my son bought me a Kindle as a present. I used it for several years. Then my wife started using it more and more, so I bought an iPad for myself, and I don't use the Kindle anymore. My son was fine with that.

If you're talking about a new iPad, trading it in for a more expensive one, why not? The person who gave it to you is not likely to notice anyway. Buy a case for it and all you see is the screen.

How about return the iPad then add money to buy an iPhone? Lol

Not sure what benefits you have from knowing if I feel good or bad about returning gifts to purchase something else. Just do what makes you happy and get the tools you want.

Personally, if I bought someone a gift and they wanted something upgraded I would be totally fine with them using the value of the gift I bought towards something they want more. If I’m gifting someone something I want them to enjoy it as much as possible. I would actually love if someone did that, returned and added some of their own cash to get what they really wanted.

I agree. I'd tell the recipient of the gift that I bought it based on my view of what would work for them and if they felt otherwise, to feel free to exchange in whatever way they want. I'd give them the receipt for proof of purchase for warranty purposes at the minimum.

Not enough information to give a reasonable response. What is the relationship between the gift giver and receiver? What was the occasion for the gift? What, if anything, was said by the gift giver to the receiver when the gift was given?

Just do it. They gave you the gift to make you happy and they did it on a budget. If you want something better, act fast and pay the difference for what you want. Problem solved. That way you are happy, and they are happy because they helped get what you wanted in the end.

Morally, return the ipad only if you're happy when you buy something if it's already been opened.
I see so many posts from people angry that something they've received has been opened and miss the irony that they get angry if you suggest they should, maybe, be less happy to return things themselves.
If it's defective ok but make the decision carefully and only buy things you want to keep. Don't buy three things knowing you are only going only keep one.
Now wait for the replies reminding me it's 'your right' to have about 40% of returned items never used again and ending up in landfill.

I’m pretty sure these Apple devices won’t end in a landfill but will become service devices or be refurbished.

The real problem starts earlier.

1. Buying someone such an expensive gift. Materialism run amok.

2. Buying someone a specialized gift where the recipient is a hobbyist or specialist in that area. They know better what they need and want!

Misses are to be expected…. Successes are wonderful.

Upgrades or replacements would be “ethical” and fit the rules of etiquette, if those were the terms of the gift-giving or the relationship was an open, frank, and honest one in which such matters could be discussed forthrightly. Otherwise, live with it — or, perhaps, after a year or two, decide differently…. (The Temporal Escape Clause.)
