iFile Questions

I installed iFile for the main purpose of being able to move files between applications. For example, I want to be able to download a PDF from my company fileserver using NetPortal, then move it to the Documents folder of GoodReader so that I can view the PDF with that viewer instead of the default one. iFile gives me the ability to access the iPhone file system to move files around in this way. It gets around the iPhone restriction of each app only being able to access the files stored in its own "sandbox".

However, there's a problem. Apple names each app folder with a cryptic hex code. To get around this, I set up iFile with bookmarks to the documents folder of the main apps I wanted to move files between. I had to go through each App folder one by one until I found the ones I wanted to bookmark. I have a lot of apps.

It's been a while since I did this. Today I discover that none of those bookmarks work anymore. Folders don't exist.

Does the iPhone change these cryptic folder names when I update?

Is there a better alternative to iFile?

Any other suggestions?

My bookmarks still work fine.
 
Get Applinks from Cydia. Run it and click the arrow thing in the lower left corner. It will go through your ~/Applications folder and create links to all your apps. The links are in the Applinks folder in your home directory and the links will be named after the app instead of gibberish.

Then you can open iFile, click the Applinks directory, then click GoodReader and you'll be in it's directory.

Rerun Applinks after you install new apps to create links for them.
 
Thanks for the update, foob, but it looks like there's no need any more. A new version of iFile has come out that names all of the app folders with their true names. Piece of cake now!

I still like AppLinks. Sometimes I want to SSH in or run a command in the terminal, and it can be lifesaver.
 
I've got my phone loaded with iFile (paid version with added features), AttachmentSaver, and Safari Download Manager now. These all work together nicely to give me full file management on the iPhone. This combo gives me much of the functionality I miss from Windows Mobile without the lousy OS to go with it.
 
The paid for version is supposed to name your tunes too. I Don't know where they are stored so I cannot test this :(

I love iFile. I think it's great you can edit your themes right there on the phone.

You mean the songs you have copied to your phone through iTunes? They should be in: /var/mobile/Media/iTunes_Control/Music

I don't know about ones copied with iTunes. I think they mean if you put an MP3 in a folder or download it with Safari or dtunes or something.

Yes I did mean those. Thank you.

It seems to work. It shows their titles now instead of just numbers.

I had seen that folder before but it was only by chance and I forgot where it was :)

What is the difference between the Cydia "iFile" and the App Store "iFile"?

What is the difference between the Cydia "iFile" and the App Store "iFile"? Other than the Cydia "iFile" is $4.00 and the App Store "iFile" is 0.99 and two different developers. They both seem to basically the same thing?

Please excuse my ignorance, I've only been JB for about a week and I'm continuously trying to learn.

Update Edit: WOW! In the time it took me to make this post, the developer of the Cydia iFile (Carsten Heinelt) personally emailed me explaining the differences and pointed me via a link to more information. I had emailed him about a minute before making this post (about 3 minutes total!). Really impressed! Needless to say, but I'll be purchasing the Cydia version.
