Just received notification of the new allegedly amazing iFlicks update.
The developers want Au$55 for the free-standing app.
No discounts for existing paid customers that want to upgrade. Well, sorry, you can get a discount but only if you switch from the stand-alone app to the 'other' option...
The other option? they have jumped on the annoying, pathetic, greedy, grubby subscription bandwagon.
You can now 'subscribe' to one of two tiers of the app for a totally unspecified price. I assume you can only find out the price by installing V3 which will undoubtedly overwrite V2.
Anyone suggest a different, easy to use video conversion app? They've lost my business.

In a van down by the river
iFlicks has worked well for me and the developer has been responsive. I went ahead and purchased version 3 for $34.95.

In my opinion, the developer is not being greedy. He needs to eat and pay bills just like the rest of us. The developer also doesn't owe anyone a discount to the new version. You seemed to haver assumed things you shouldn't have. You aren't entitled to free. The problem is your mindset not the developer.

Installing version 3 does not overwrite version 2.

I think you are being overly harsh and a bit unrealistic.

1) - I do not expect developers to produce quality software for free. I run my own business so I totally get that.
2) - They are offering a discount but only on a 'subscription', the cost of which is not specified anywhere.
3) - It is pretty normal practice to offer existing, paying users a discount on an updated version.
4) - $55 may not be a lot to you but it certainly is for me especially when I have paid for the app since V1.
5) - Subscription model may be the in thing but they are just greedy. It's nothing but a way to keep people paying for nothing.

There is nothing wrong with my 'mindset' & I take offence at that comment. I would also like you to point out the assumptions you claim I have made.

You expected a discount to the new version when the developer has never ever stated there would be one. The only reason to be mad at not getting one, is because you assumed / felt you were entitled to such just because others may have offered such with their product.

1) You don't have to upgrade. Version 2 still works.
2) You can save up the money for the new version.
3) You can email the developer and see if you can get some kind of promo code to help with the cost, since you have been a long time user.
4) You can find another product

The developer has done nothing wrong. There is no greedy money grab. He offers a free trial with the new version and if you like, you can subscribe, or use the MAS version. And like I said, version 2 still works and won't be disabled because of version 3.

You have several options. You can get offended all you want. That is your choice. Take away your wrongful expectation of a free or discounted upgrade, and there isn't anything of left to be mad about. Ergo, the problem is with your thinking / expectation, in my opinion.

blah, blah, blah... Take away your wrongful expectation of a free... upgrade... ... in my opinion.
Please tell me where I ever mentioned that I had an expectation of a free upgrade?
Oh, I know... NOWHERE. So why you are even stating that I have zero idea.
And yes, in your opinion, because this is the year 2019 & facts & the opinions of others are irrelevant.
Fact is it is a steep cost for an update & subscription models suck. Period. They may be a good model for power-users or business users of various apps or packages but for the average, casual user they are just a leach.

Thanks Ritsuka, was going to investigate Handbrake again, haven't used it for years.
I'll give them a whirl & then just have them ready to go once iFlicks 2 isn't supported any longer.
I've used Handbrake in combination with Subler for years and never felt a need to pay for other apps that do the same thing, sometimes with lower quality. But saying that, you will have to be a little more hands on. Handbrakes presets have been refined over years of use and are very good. Most of my additional "hands on" is when working with Subler and importing/editing metadata. I certainly think it's an option if the price of the application you have been using has become too pricy for you. But that's your call.

I can't see any downside with it I have the iFlicks 2 and now I'm going over to yearly subscription for around 10 USD or something like that I can't remember the price it's still cheaper then the iFlicks 3 that have a price tag at around 30 USD and then you can't upgrade to iFlicks 4 for free either.

The encoding is very fast with the new version, not to mention smaller file sizes. I like it so far.

I have never used iFlicks. In fact, I have never even heard of iFlicks. However, it took me exactly 3 seconds to Google "iFlicks", click the first search result that led me straight to their homepage, and then click the Subscriptions link right the middle of their homepage:

Yes, I agree with your general sentiment that subscriptions are a stupid idea. I'm with you on that one and I try to avoid subscriptions in life in general wherever possible. However, you are wrongfully accusing the developer of not specifying the subscription price. Again, took me 3 seconds. Think about it.

I am glad they at least have stand alone version. I hated when companies went to subscriptions with no way of getting the new software for one time price.
I was wondering all through the beta if they were going to offer it. I have been getting used to Sublr because I thought they were going sub based only.

It's July, I get this is kind of an older thread, just thought I'd continue with it, as I've just bought a NAS and an Infuse package for my IOS / ATV setup.
I've been with iFlicks since v1, paid for upgrades and haven't used it for a long time, as I went cord cutting and use quite a few streaming services, I'm not against subscriptions and realistically the iFlicks sub is pretty cheap.

Wondering if I'm using Infuse ( and or Plex) it ( iFlicks) becomes redundant or compliments?

I nearly pulled the trigger last night, but stopped as it was beer o'clock and I thought better of it.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

I hate subscriptions so I went ahead and paid for the standalone iflicks 3
Is very confusing when there are 3 iflicks apps in the AppStore

if you deal with x265 videos files at all is worth the upgrade to iflicks 3
