I tried but all it did was lock up when i get to step 3 unlock (irony?)

Step 3 is where you have to force the iPhone into recovery mode by pressing the home and sleep/wake buttons together for about 25 seconds. See here: http://www.hacktheiphone.com/iphone_easy_ringtone_installation_mac_intel.html

I must be an idiot or something, but do you hold it for 25 seconds? I did it for around 30 seconds but it just started up normally. I tried this 2 other times also with the same result. Do you hold it until the "please connect to itunes" screen and then let it go? Thanks.

Yeah, it says that in the instructions list as you're doing the steps. Read them ffs! (45 seconds)

Make sure you are using the latest version of Ifuntastic. I have used it about 8 times already to add ringtones, and to reorder the springboard with no issues whatsoever.

use ringtonemaker instead much much easier and dont have to mess with holding the sleep wake button....I have added tones of ringtones with this app..Only cost 10 bucks one click and your done
