So looking at the spec sheets and the "Whats Included" section - it looks like iLife 6 is only on the new Intel Macs and not the older G4/G5 systems.

Does this mean that iLife 6 won't work on G4/G5 systems? And if I bought a new machine today (I did - Quad G5) am I stuck with iLife 5?

I thought I remember seeing something during the keynote that Steve mentioned that all systems would come with iLife 6....

Its not that it won't run on a non IntelMac - its whether its going to come pre installed on a machine ordered today and after if its not an IntelMac.

I ordered a Quad and it has this on the Spec Page (which is the same for all the G5s and G4 machines) and next to it the "What's in the Box" for the IntelMacs...

I reckon you'll get 06. It's not unlike Apple to forget to update some pages in their excitement as they release new products. :p

I'll play the optimist here - but it will be interesting to see - the order said it would take 2-4 days to ship, but then when the confirmation came through it said it would ship on the 17th - so I'm thinking that's to get the new software.

But it would good to know if that is the case sooner than later if someone else buys a new G5 right now and gets it before the end of next week.

Yeah, they really should make it a bit clearer. Though I suppose it's difficult to make all of these changes, manage all of the orders etc AND keep it all a secret at the same time.

So Mr. A, are you still happy about getting a Quad? I guess it's likely to be faster than the top of the line Core Duo iMac, at least for now?

ha - its going to be fast for a while and then some. I'm really happy and want it here *now*.

And I'll probably get a new Intel Mac Pro or what ever they're called in a year or so depending on what happens with my freelance work. Regardless, the Quad is going to scream compared to my dual 1.25 G4 :D

And the 7800 GT graphics card and 8 gigs of RAM is not going to hurt, either. I was sort of hoping they'd have released a Mac version of the 7800 GTX card with 512 Megs of RAM, but that will have to wait.

Steve said iLife would be shipping with all new Macs, not all new Macs except the Mac mini, iBook, Power Mac, PowerBook and iMac G5 :p. If it doesn't come in the box, call Apple. I'm sure it's supposed to be included. I noticed some other areas of Apples page that were not yet updated to reflect today's announcements, and I've seen the same sort of thing happen before on the day of a major announcement.

It is an envy inspiring system -

From a recent Joel Santo Domingo (pcmag) review: "The Quad G5 got the highest score we've ever seen on the CPU-stressing CineBench rendering test: 1,104. The Pentium EE840 overclocked to 3.6 GHz recently got a 667, and an Athlon 64 4800+ overclocked to 2.7 GHz scored 775. CineBench is a multithreaded app, so the more cores or threads your system can handle, the more efficiently your workload gets done."

Some other site recently called it "the Hummer of desktops". So, apparently you'll be able to use it in high standing water...

Okay, if the machine doesn't include iLife '06 it won't hurt too much to fix it. http://www.apple.com/ilife/uptodate/

Well that's a huge pain in the rearend - and $10 dollars more isn't that much, but you'd think that if you spent $4k+ on a machine that you wouldn't have to deal with this at all - I think the inconvenience of the upgrade is my biggest peeve here.

But its been shipped and should arrive tomorrow - so I'll know then - even though the Apple store *still* says '05 on the web page....

But thanks for the link!

If you call them, I can't imagine them not sending it to you for free. My impressions of Apple support to date have not been great, but surely they understand that a $4,000 purchase means you're a valued customer.

I'll put money on you getting iLife '06..

The UK store also says the Quad comes with '05... have apple fallen so out of love with the G5 that they no longer care to update their sites with the relevant info?

Off topic: whenver I read "Choose a Power Mac G5 Dual or Power Mac G5 Quad and prepare to be blown away. Featuring dual-core PowerPC processors, a modern PCI Express architecture and wicked-fast workstation graphics." on the apple site I can't help but laugh..

I mean steve saying the Core Duos are screaming is one thing, but "wicked-fast"... am I being too English about this?
