iLife and Mountain Lion and Apple Care

I searched and couldn't seem to find this?
Does iLife come with Mountain Lion in a 2012 Mac Mini?
Also is it true you can purchase Apple Care as long as your product is still in warranty? 90 days or 1 year?

Yes, but you have to download it from the App Store. When you first turn the machine on and setup a user account, start the App Store app and login to it then you will see all the iLife apps available for download.
 
iLife does come installed with ML on 2012 Mac Minis. iPhoto, iMovie and GB are all there when you boot your new mini for the first time.
 
Thanks folks. If I buy a Mini today and get Apple Care is it the exact same price and policy if I buy AC 6 months from now?
 
Same price no matter when you purchase AC - most purchase within 1 year for Macs.

Also I suggest purchasing from B&H Video if you are living in the US. Significantly cheaper. No tax for those outside of NY.

Are you getting confused between ilife and iwork? iLife is - iphoto, imovie, garage band.

I don't think so, unless they changed something for this latest 2012 model. Since Lion you have always had to DL it from the App Store. Have you done this yourself with a 2012? My 2012 MBA I had to DL iLife from the App Store.

My new 2012 mac mini had iLife already installed. No download required.

As a strategy, does it make sense to buy AC close to the end of that first year, the idea being that if something were to happen it would happen later than sooner? Also, the first year is already covered, right? (I'm probably missing something....)

I was wondering that as well. How would Apple protect themselves against an unscrupulous person who, say 6 months after the purchase has a machine break, then gets AC and tells Apple it broke just before I got the AC?
Not that any Mac folks are unscrupulous:eek:

you don't understand if it is month 6 and the machine breaks you are covered. if it is 364 days and the machine breaks your are covered and allowed to buy applecare. if it is 1 day past a year oh well you can not buy it. and your coverage is gone.

so why fork over the the 100 to 150 early when you are allowed to wait until the 364th day. I usually buy applecare in the 10th or 11th month. of course if a real seller has
it at a discount I buy it then. right now i can get apple care on a mini for

this brings me to 114 as a clean buy.

if I wait and look around enough i usually pay 99 to 105 from real sellers.
 
I have the Applecare bundled at time of purchase. IMO, I think those with the Applecare attached to the system, regardless of when it may fail, are treated a little better. That's just my feeling, no statistics behind it. Kind of like a premium membership in the Apple club, lol.

make a lot of sense if you buy a monitor with your machine and you don't do any diy except add ram.

you know if you order via the education store or the government store it is discounted.

Thanks for the info. A change for the better! I remember when they first stopped preinstalling iLife, the forums had many confused new users wondering how to get iLife.

I added a SSD and did a clean install of Mountain Lion. When it was all done, I had to get iLife from the app store again. That actually saves me space because I only use iPhoto. GarageBand takes up quite a bit of space.

With no evidence that buying AppleCare bundled with a Mac enhances Apple's customer service, I think that this can be a waste of money unless the bundle price is lower than the normal retail price. B&H Photo sometimes has Mac/AppleCare bundles with extended AppleCare discounted 50%, which is the best discount I have ever seen.

I can see where the store where you buy the bundle might treat you better at the time of the sale; it adds additional profit to the sale and the salesperson's commission.
 
My new Mac mini on its way is my 4th Mac and i always buy AC straight way.
There is no advantage to waiting.
As far as i am aware its 3 years from date of purchase of the computer and not when you decide to get AC. So why wait?

If this is your first Mac get AC for sure.

Here is why.

My first Mac a 2006 G5 iMac blew its logic board 2 years and 10 months ofter i bought it!!
Would have cost about £700.00 to fix.
Also i have found the telephone support really helpful over the years.
Sometimes there are AC staff that don't know that much but mostly my experience has been that i have had very informed AC phone support people on the other end, and very friendly too.

Ooh, good point about GarageBand. Last night I did a clean install on my 3rd party SSD, then compared it to the hard drive to see if there were any differences. As far as I could tell, the only real differences were the preinstalled iLife apps and data on the hard drive.

I figured I would just continue setting up the hard drive as I wanted it, and then clone that to the SSD when ready (overwriting the test install I did). But now that you mention GarageBand, maybe I'll just go from the SSD clean install and leave GB off. Thanks. :)
