iLife'06 .... worth it?

Hhmmm ... never had iLife before. I just run OS X 10.3.9 on my iMac G5. Haven't seen the need for Panther, but iLife '06 looks interesting. Is it worth it to have a .mac account? I know little about webpage publishing, but this also seems like a fun way for a novice like me to put up a page. I'm primarily interested in posting pics, blogs, some music I make and videos I produce. Would a .mac account hold this on a wepage? I heard you get 1 GB of bandwidth for a .mac account ... not much considering it's going to hold email, backup AND my webpage(s). What do you think of all this? Should I just get iLife for it's web building and podcast options? Is it worth it? Should I just figure out an easier way to host a website - $79 for iLife AND $99 for a year's worth of a .mac account is a lot of dough for me. Or should I splurge and get it?

Well, I find that iWeb is pretty good for website novices. Whilst it integrates well with .Mac, you can quite easily upload it somewhere else so maybe look at getting iLife and then a cheap hosting account somewhere other than Apple. I have .Mac but not because of integration with iWeb.

FWIW, given the choice of how to spend my money, I'd buy an upgrade to Tiger over an upgrade of iLife. :)
 
Well, If i'm reading your post correctly, you don't have iLife at all?

You should get it--it's an amazing piece of software, especially the new iWeb and upgraded features. If you have iLife, .Mac is worth it IMHO because iLife makes it so easy--on purpose, of course--to put everything you do in iLife on to it. Also, you get 5gb of storage I believe and 1 terabyte of bandwidth.

I would have thought an iMac G5 would have come with at least iLife 04, probably iLife 05 but you're right, Bubbles32 implies a lack of iLife. :eek:
 
Depends on your needs and what you might use it for. I think just playing around with it gives great ideas on how it could be used for constructive purposes. .mac (I have it, and am still iffy on it).
 
Well,

iLife '06 is a much better improvement compared to '05 than '05 was to '04.
But since you never used iLife this info doesn't get you anywhere...

iLife will let you produce and publish everything you where talking about, it's really worth the money.
As for .Mac, it's interesting. If you're just going to use it for publishing your material you're probably better of with a cheaper hosting-only plan somewhere. .Mac does offer some other benefits like syncing, photocasting, backup, one-click-publishing and stuff like that. For some of these things you need .Mac, others can be done with freeware and/or -services.

Get iLife, try out the 3 month trial of .Mac.

btw: standard .Mac size is 1 Gb, upgradable to 4 Gb. You also get 10 Gb monthly transfer (upgradable to 250 Gb/month).
 
I love it. I have yet to use all the neat features of iMovie, but I love iPhoto. I have been playing around with iWeb which is pretty cool. I wish it had more editing features. I guess we will have to wait for iLife 07.

You DO have iLife - it came with your iMac. It's probably just an older version though. iLife is just a package containing five programs: iPhoto, iDVD, iMovie, GarageBand, and iWeb. However, you probably have an older version, which does not include iWeb. One way to tell which version you have, open iPhoto (in your Applications folder) and choose "About iPhoto" from the iPhoto menu in the menu bar.

Version 4 - You have iLife '04. Upgrading will dramatically enhance all apps (faster, more features) and add iWeb.

Version 5 - You have iLife '05. You already have lots of features. Upgrading is less of a bargain and will give you cosmetic improvements, iWeb, and some web publishing features.

As for .Mac, it does EXACTLY what you need. It'll make blog and photo gallery publishing as easy as a button-press. However, you WILL need iLife 06 to fully take advantage of it. Also, it offers a whopping terabyte (1000 GB) of bandwidth, so you could conceivably host a major podcast with 20,000 downloads a month using just .Mac and iWeb.

FYI, you're already running Panther, the sequel is called "Tiger". You may want to get it, but I find that while it does speed up your Mac and add quite a few useful features, if you want to host a website, you're probably better off getting iLife 06 and .Mac instead.

EDIT: I'm pretty sure .Mac offers a TB, but redeye be says otherwise. Can someone clear this up?

So I realized I have iLife '04 .... my Mac's only a year old and it's already way behind!!!!

So I'm got Panther ... no need for Tiger ... the only feature I see that would be REALLY handy is finding out where the cheapest gas is - and I don't have a car! LOL ;)

HHMmmmmm ... you're convincing me to spend money .... and are you SURE about that bandwidth amount? Very tempting, indeed.

But if you do get iLife '06, please, please don't buy .mac with it. It's $99...PER YEAR! There are other, much cheaper ways and better ways to start your own web hub
 
Yeah? Wow ... thanks ... very good advice. I already did the .mac trial three month thing and rarely used it. 99 bucks seems steep ... and every year? Yikes. I'll stick with my hotmail account and find some other host. Although .... with a .mac account (new question thread here) ... when I send people simple, small .jpeg's .... sometimes they can't read 'em ... that is, when I send them via Hotmail. It's odd ... sometimes they can see my pics and sometimes they can't ... or they have to take a roundabout way of viewing them .... is it easier with a .mac account? Do .jpegs send easier? Is that sentence correct??? Thanks!

Agree with mad jew. Tiger is nice to have if you have the $. The Widgets are useful as well as other appls
