I'm currently rocking an iPhone 8. With obnoxiously bad battery life. In September it'll be all paid off and I'll be looking to upgrade. The obvious choice would the smaller 5.4 inch(?) iPhone 12. While I will most likely upgrade anyway, I would really like these features. The first few will be likely features, while the next few will be wishful thinking.

iPad Pro/iPhone 4/5 boxy design-
This rumor has been around for a while and makes sense. It would be sensible to refresh the design language and in my personal opinion, it would look far better than all the smooth curves.
Usb-c-
Please, Apple. We shouldn't have to beg for this feature. I have a MacBook Pro and an iPad Pro. While it's not horrible, it's kind of annoying to have a lighting charger at my desk. Apple is all about "the ecosystem". It would make sense to have all their devices use a universal charger.
Smaller notch-
With all the R&D money at their disposal, it would be beyond stupid to keep the same size notch three years running. But Apple does have a history of ignoring people like me and just doing whatever they want.

Now for the wishful thinking
ProMotion-
It would be nice, but not a deal breaker
No notch/cutout/under screen camera-
Imo the circle cutout looks better than the notch. And an under-screen camera would be DOPE! With an all screen display, and no notch/cutout it would look pretty sweet, along with the boxy design, it would look sweet.
5G-
To 5G or not to 5G, that is the question. Personally don't care either way, and I don't think it would be included in the 12. More likely the Pro Max variant.

We already know based on credible rumors USB-C won’t happen. It doesn’t make sense to change billions of Lightning connectors around the world when most people use it only for charging.

Smaller notch and 5G will happen. Phones with 5G have been available for the last 6 months for as low as $500 and continue to be more affordable.

Boxy design? It wouldn’t appeal to me, I think the current design is really beautiful. But it could be they’ll take a new direction.

My bet is the notch may be downsized a tad, but having 3D Face ID - I’m sure it will have - plus front-facing camera(s) without a notch or a chunky bezel is a mighty engineering challenge. Other makers have plumped for loonie tune ideas like pop-up cameras and swivelling cameras, or they’ve settled for a notch. The notch only looks weird until it’s in front of you all the time, then your brain blanks it out. Honestly.

There’s far too much fuss about USB-C IMHO, especially now I’m totally sold on wireless charging, and now the federalist EU is trying to interfere I instinctively side with Apple and the lightning connector.

One thing I happen to know about the 2020 iPhones is that Apple will sell 100m+ of them. That’s inside info, keep it to yourself.

As I've said before - although I don't really want USB-C to replace lighting at the phone end (too many cables that I have and would have to replace a bunch) but it is the other end that would really be a problem. Everywhere there are USB-A connections to charge and use - cars (carplay), hotels, gyms, planes, homes, etc. It would really be an inconvenience to not be able to use those or have to carry extra conversion cables around. Since it has taken many years to get ports everywhere I would think it would be even longer for all those places to replace USB-A with C

Didn’t Apple already make the other end usb c with the 11.

The only reason Apple still has lightning is because Apple wants to bleed third party accessory makers for money for mifi status.

I don’t understand why others believe that lightning all of a sudden will be abandoned by Apple. It’s a huge monopoly for them, and it’s still relevant for years to come. Look at the AirPods, it’s still supported by lightning, just as the iPod touch is.

Even if Apple were abandon lightning tomorrow, that wouldn’t change consumers mindset in terms of wanting to get rid of their iPhone for USB-C, but probably push them to keep their iPhone longer considering their investment with lightning enabled devices/accessories.

You literally listed reasons why I wouldn’t buy an iPhone 12 with the exception of the last 3. I dislike the iPhone 5 to the point where if it looked like it does in the rumors I’ll keep my 11 pro until something else entices me like an Android device or perhaps the 13, or 14. USB C is nice and all and would be on that bandwagon if it happened 7 years ago not now.

The 11s is going to be boring.

Because iPhones are generally exciting? [Rhetorical] I don’t think consumers generally care about iPhones the way we do on sites like this, it pretty much comes down to the camera in terms of why the average consumer would want to upgrade.

AND avoid the lawsuits from the folks that buy cheap 100w USB-c chargers and cables, connect those to their USB-C iPhone and completely fry it :)

USB-C port is the main thing that will get me to upgrade, as silly as that may sound. A new design language, too.

At this point the only reason I need lightning cables is for my iPhone. Everything else is either USB-C (pretty much all my other Apple products…) or micro-USB (Kindle, headphones, etc).

Won’t be 12 will be 11S.
unless you have inside sources you don't really know that at this stage...

more ram
120HZ
time of flight
reverse wireless charging
new build

all make the 12 more than just an s phone if we do get those features. never mind the fact cameras are suppose to be even better

Don't reckon most average consumers care overmuch about camera either.

The non-techies I know tend to just replace their phones when something starts going wrong with their old one (e.g. broken, short battery, slow performance or lack of storage).

you don’t know any of that either

All I care about is ditching the GARBAGE Intel Modems. If we can have something that works better than that, preferably Qualcomm, then I would be more that happy to upgrade!

This. Since iPhone 7 series, people have been suffering from bad connections whether it’s cellular or WiFi. And it’s all because of those crappy Intel modems inside iPhones.

I didn’t make a claim that it won’t be anything special, you did. There’s a difference

You’re guessing that it will be 11s when you don’t know that’s the case

just like you are guessing lol

My quessing are at least based off rumours from leakers who are credible...point is at this stage nobody knows if it will be a big upgrade or not

Broadcom makes the Wi-Fi chip for iPhone and has since day one.

What you're describing is selection bias. There have been connectivity issues with Qualcomm modems. People have just blamed Intel because it's the only thing they understand.
