so i have a few vector shapes and I want them all to have the same background (an image) but with masking I can only do one shape for each background... is there a way around this????

Or, select all shapes (except the image) to be involved in the mask. Go to Object>Compound Path>Make.
Then make sure that this new compound shape is above the image you want to mask.
Select all objects including the image.
Then Go Object>Clipping Path>Make
