Illustrator - Drop Shadow Problem

It's probably obvious but I can't figure it out...
I'm working with Illustrator 10 and I have placed a jpg image into the working document, when I try to put a drop shadow to it it will not show it.
I've tried with other shapes and they work fine but not with the placed image????

I've checked that the file from which I'm placing is unlocked just in case...

Please help!! It's driving me crazy!

My first guess would be that it's limited to vector shapes created in Illustrator. That is said with Illustrator upstairs and me to lazy to go check it out. The quick fix would be to make a box the same size as your image, add the drop shadow to that, then place it underneath and group.

Perhaps I'm wrong though, and Illustrator will add drop shadows to placed images. I could just hate you.

i think you are right about the vector only drop shadows in Illustrator. I frankly never apply effects in illustrator ( i do them all in PS ). You are better off creating a dropped shadow on a new document in PS and placing that into illustrator if you have to. I just dont like using any image in illustrator. Its not a raster program, and doesnt play well with pixels.

I would check a couple of things just to make sure they aren't simple fixes...did the drop shadow go on to another layer? Is there actual 'color' associated with the drop shadow? (And are the shadow settings large enough to see?) and lastly...is there something in 'between' the image and the shadow - if they aren't grouped?
Just a thought...I've only used the CS versions & have had it happen before, but I can't recall why. You might try copying the image into a blank document and put the shadow on it there...that might help you narrow it down a little.

Shadow fiasco...

Well, I've checked off all your suggestions to no avail. Perhaps the best one has been to do the shadowing in PS, I'll try that next.

I forgot to mention that the image was rotated on my document, but I don't think that makes a difference.

Any other suggestions? I do appreciate very much the input received.

I have Illustrator CS here and i don't have any problems applying a drop shadow to a placed jpeg.
After I place (File -> Place...) the jpeg i select the jpeg and then choose Filter -> Stylize -> Drop Shadow...
In the dialog box that pop's up i can choose the colour, opacity, x and y offset, things like that.
Maybe it's a new CS feature? What you could do is download the CS demo version from adobe.com and fix it with that, than continue to work with the file in Illustrator 10.

and if my previous post does't help, why don't you just draw a square in a layer beneeth the jpeg and apply the drop shadow to the square? same result i would say.

After you apply the drop shadow, is the effect listed in the appearance palette? Also, in AI 10 if you´re given the option to add drop shadow to an object/image (as opposed to greyed out menus) it should work.

Have you tried binning the prefs file?

If nothing works i too would have put a box with the effect behind the image, that way it´ll be easier to change and control it.
