Hi everyone, this is my first post and please be kind and do not flame me if i do something wrong like post to a wrong place or else..

Anyway, here is my question.

I'm not flaming you, but I'm afraid that I don't quite understand your question ...

If you mean that you want to take a character and split it in half so that it is two separate shapes, like this:



There are a number of ways. In almost all cases, you will need to convert your text to outlines (select the text box or path NOT the text itself and hit [CMD]-[SHIFT]-[O]).

I then draw a line (no fill selected) with either the Pen or Line tool over the top of the letter(s). Select both the line and the letter and go Pathfinder -> Divide.

You may need to Ungroup -- [CMD]-[SHIFT]-G -- but you will then have your character or characters split as shown.

It sounds more complicated than it is, and there's probably an easier way that someone else will volunteer.

If that isn't what you meant, then I apologize ...

Err ... then you do exactly what I said. Create and outline each letter separately, draw a line over the top where you want it to split, use Pathfinder -> Divide and then position the two separate bits of the letter.

You can also do the same thing by "masking" Put multiple copies of the letters on seperate layers. On each of the layers you can put down an object (in your case it looks like they are all rectangles of some sort), with no line weight. You can then mask the letters to the object, and then group them all together. This allows you to move your portion of a letter anywhere you want on the screen. By masking rather than creating a new shape, you can change fonts, change how the object is masked, all sorts of things.
