Illustrator help: live cursor issues!

My cursor has just started to highlight the items I roll over in my document, and notes things like "path," "edge," and when I roll over type it highlights all of my text in a light teal color. It's driving me crazy! Can anyone help me?

you may have inadvertently hit command-u, which is the shortcut for those smart guides...

I do that all the time btw... because I still have to use Quark all the time, and command-u in QXP is 'ungroup'... lol
