Illustrator help

I'm trying to add a fill colour to a custom shape and it won't add any colour. It'll add colour to custom shapes no problem, but I made my own by joining a quarter circle with a small square. There are no breaks in the joins and as far as I can tell its a full shape which needs a fill colour.

Basic issue but I've just started on Illustrator. Thanks if anybody can help.

now, on the tools pallette on the left, at the bottom there is a white square and a black outline behind it. That is the "fill and stroke" boxes.

when you have an object selected, click the fill (white) box twice, and that will bring up a color picker. select your color and click ok.

there are a million other ways to fill colors, but this is the most basic and easiest to explain.

The solution worked thanks, but why doesn't it just work the way it does when it comes to the basic shapes? All you have to do there is select your colour and after selecting the fill colour option just click on the shape.

not sure exactly what you are saying, but like i said, there are a million ways to do this in illustrator like most adobe products.

you can go to window>swatch libraries> then pick any of the choices - i use pantone solid to process the most as i do lots of print work. this will bring up new pallettes of color swatches that you can choose from.

now, select your object you colored, and go back to the fill/stroke box.... you can hit the little arrow, and that will swap the fill and stroke colors.

Select the color and THEN select the object? I've always done the reverse, select the object, *then* the color. That is unless you're using creating a new shape; at that point you can select a color and the shape you draw will have that color. Objects that are already drawn have to be selected before they'll take on the color, at least as far as I know.
