illustrator paintbrush stroke outline

question for the illustrator experts.

i got a stroke, that has a paintbrush effect on it. i'd like that to turn that brush stroke into an outlined path.

when i do an outline stroke, to that path. it outlines as if it doesn't have the painbrush effect on it, but as if it's just a regular 1 pt line.

so i just rasterized the stroke, and then did a live trace > convert to live paint.

is this the best way to do this?

use object>expand appearance instead. Just watch out because it creates leaves the original path in there grouped to the new outline.
