illustrator + photoshop CS3 questions

couple questions.

Illustrator - Client wants me to add a project info slug to documents. When i write a PDF from Illustrator and add a 1" bleed, it won't write the slug. anyone have any ideas?

Photoshop - when you increase the window, greater then the image, it used to give me a grey background, but now it's black. anyone know how to change this back, without going back to default settings?

Here's an alternative for the Illustrator slug...

File > File Info - allows you to embed info into file without actually adding elements to the document. This info can be viewed in either Preview or Acrobat.​

Photoshop Canvas color

Have you checked your Screen Mode? at the bottom of your Tools you'll find your Screen Mode. You may have it set to Full Screen Mode which gives you the black background click on the icon and change it to Full Screen Mode with Menu Bar. This will return your pull-down menus and your background to gray.

If that doesn't fix your background color, please refer to this page, which contains instructions for changing Photoshop's Canvas color.​

Okay. Then make the graph. Just make sure that the Pasteboard in illustrator is big enough to accommodate it and that you are using a specific kind of Crop Mark to define your page. Instead of Object > Crop Area > Make use Filter > Create > Crop Marks (the second method requires that you first make a frame the size of the area you want to define as your page).

If you're not married to illustrator, use Indesign which allows for a slug area. Or do your work in Illustrator and then Copy/Paste your work into Indesign or place a PDF into it. I rarely work in Illustrator anymore.

unfortunately i have to work in illustrator on some files, due to the other designers i work with.

this is a workaround, if I want to make the artboard larger then the actual document/piece size, which i'm trying to avoid. Trying not to complicate this work file, and would prefer the document size to be the correct size.

Place the illustrator artwork in the slug area within an InDesign document.
Export to PDF and include the slug.
Alternatively, simply place the entire *oversized AI layout within InDesign, and position it such that the graph artwork is within the slug area.

AI is not a page layout app; trying shoehorn it into a workflow as such will just needlessly complicate the project.
