I want to get into making my own band posters. Is Adobe Illustrator the way to go?

It rather depends on the style you're aiming for.

If you're looking to do bold, text- or shape-based designs, then Illustrator is as good a package as you'll find.

If you're doing something that's more of collage/photomontage/painting in nature, then you'd probably be better with Photoshop.

Cheers!

I hate Illustrator. It's counter-intuitive and not beginner-friendly. That's said, it has a good complement of features, and if you need an absolute guarantee on compatibility, Illustrator is what you need. But it can't hurt to try free (Inkscape) and lost cost alternatives first.
