illustrator v. indesign

just wondering which program people here use for designing layouts of books, portfolios etc.

im currently making a portfolio book, and started off with illustrator to draw, but then i ended up with laying out one whole page in illustrator; when i initially was going to paste it in indesign and then layout there.

i realised that there really is no need for indesign now because of the multi artboard function in illustrator and also because i have little experience with indesign.

for indesign users, are there any big advantanges of using indesign compared to illustrator?

InDesign is a proper layout application with far more control over type handling, grids, linked elements and PDF production to name a few examples.

However, just as there are blurred lines within Creative Suite apps, you can also do certain projects in whichever app you have to hand. Photoshop has vector tools, InDesign has basic drawing tools, for instance. But that doesn't mean that it's the best tool for the job.

I layout all publications/books/flyers/stationery whatever in either Quark or InDesign. Never Illustrator... that's used for creating components that then go into layout.

Illustrator is considered a vector drawing program, not a layout program. The CS3 and previous versions are limited to a single page per document. CS4 allows multiple pages and page sizes per document, but it should not be used as a layout program. InDesign is a layout program with all the tools and options for handling documents with a lot of pages.

If your serious about page layouts and book design, then inDesign is the definate choice.

on the other hand, if all somebody is doing is creating individual pages for their portfolio, Illustrator should be satisfactory for the task if that's the program they have available
