Guys, hopefully somebody here can help.

I was setting up a user account and permissions for the account and in my haste I have changed the pemission on the root of my local drive for *everyone* to *no access* and now cant boot the drive, even to login page.

Is there any way, using the disk utility to reset the disk permissions? I have already tried the First Aid, but to no avail, there is an error on exit reported.

Can I by any chance go in and change the disk settings in Terminal??

If you have a Install DVD handy you should be able to run its copy of Disk Utility and repair Permissions from there. Or if you have another Mac you can mount the iMac's drive over USB and do the same thing.

As for mounting the drive over usb, i have a mini here as well, how do i mount the image over usb? and how do i change the permissions when there? is it a case of changing them in the disk info??

1) Where is it that you attempted to repair the permissions from and failed? Since you can't even boot the internal drive I'm thinking it was from the Install DVD?

2) What are the specs of the system, I know it is an iMac but for things such as booting over USB that requires an Intel iMac. (Pre-Intel will use Firewire)


Ideally if you can mount the drive on the mini it might be possible to change the permissions back, either via Get Info or some other means.

Ok,

I'm afraid your going to need some form of USB connection since you clearly need to be booting off a 2nd OS in order to load a UI which will display the un-bootable drive.

I do believe Firewire can still be used on the Intel systems so if you happen to have a Firewire cable around you can try that.

I have a firwire cable i could do it with im sure. so do I connect the firwire and treat it like an external drive?? do i still boot to the disk utility on the install dvd on the imac to enable the mount??

Connect the Firewire cable on each Mac, on the iMac start the machine holding down the letter "T".

When a Firewire Logo appears on the iMac screen the internal drive should mount on the mini giving you all the access of an external drive. You can try the permission repair from Disk Utility but if you had problems using the Install Disc you might encounter the same problem. You can also try Get Info and in a worse case scenario you can always backup all your files in order to reinstall the OS.
