Are there any IM apps out there that support multitasking? I've had my eyes on eBuddy pro but it doesn't mention it and neither do any of the other apps I've seen. It seems like the perfect type of app to support fast app switching, there must be some out there?

Any recommendations would be appreciated :)

I'd steer clear from eBuddy. I use Beejive IM, it's always being updated, and it is multitasking (fast app switching) capable. I'd highly recommend it. I'm sure other IM apps also have it.

I've been using BeeJive and have recently purchased eBuddy.

eBuddy supports multitasking. eBuddy also promises to reconnect to the underlying services (e.g. AIM, MSN, Facebook, Gtalk, etc.) when they disconnect. I am not clear if their server does the reconnecting or the client must reconnect. Can someone confirm either way?

BeeJive doesn't support auto reconnecting.

Interesting. I'm only ever signed in on my iPhone yet AIM, GTalk, and sometimes Facebook disconnect at random times during the week (presumably when these services are seeing maintenance?). The disconnects do not correspond to the session timeout.

You can see from the Beejive feature request forum that there are people asking for Beejive to add a reconnecting feature. The value of reconnect is when the underlying service is disconnected for whatever reason, other than the session timeout period, the server (BeeJives, eBuddy, etc.) should make a good attempt to reconnect and this should happen as seamlessly as possible so the user doesn't notice.
