I have a Macbook, a Playstation 3, and an Apple TV. I have over 90 movies (which can be weeded down) ripped from my DVD collection streaming to my Apple TV now, via my iTunes. All are stored on an external hard drive.

My question is, can I just cut out the Apple TV and stream these all to the Playstation 3. Actually, I would prefer just moving over a select few onto the Playstation harddrive. All were ripped via HandBrake in Apple TV format.

How would I go about this? I like to think of myself as very tech literate, but I'm not in my specialty right now (audio and video).

Thanks for any and all help.

To stream your movies to the PS3 you will need another piece of software to accomplish this. I use Medialink by Nullriver software, it only costs $20 and I have not had any problems with it. The only thing you will not be able to do is stream to your PS3 any content with DRM (iTunes store bought content songs or movies). Maybe eventually we will be able to get the movie studios to remove the DRM from the videos to but I don't see that happening any time soon.

Like iscripter, I also use Medialink and it works well. However, be careful with your HD content as it will sometimes have stuttering issues when wireless streaming. I don't have an :apple:TV so I'm not familiar with all of the nuances, but for the PS3 I mainly use mp4, vob, or avi formats for my videos. The new Handbrake has presets for PS3 ripping/converting, but I mainly use VisualHub. If you want to put files on your PS3 hard drive then keep in mind that it is formatted in FAT32 which means you will not be able to store or play files larger than 4GB in size. This can also make HD content more challenging. As far as what you have already ripped, you won't know until you try those files. Last year my father in law ripped some DVD's for us on an older version of Handbrake and my PS3 will not recognize those files. I'm not sure what settings he used, but they are in mp4 format. Everything I've done in VisualHub has worked without a problem. Hope this info helps. Good luck.

I've tried streaming Handbrake'd movies with the AppleTV preset in the past using medialink and they have never worked on my PS3. I haven't tried with the updated version of Handbrake but I don't suspect anything has changed. You'll have to re-encode your movies to work on the PS3 (further diminishing the quality in the process) or rip everything over again and encode using the PS3 pre-set in handbrake.

It is possible to encode a movie to work on both but I don't remember the settings I used. I ended up giving up and going with strictly the AppleTV preset so I could get 5.1 audio.
