I'm beginning to hate my macbook.

I'm a very bitter man right now.

My MacBook is a victim of the random shutdown problem that some are starting to complain about. I got fed up with it and took it the Genius Bar last Tuesday. I picked it up tonight and was told they ran an 8 hour diagnostic with no problem and they replaced the top case. Great... or so I thought.

I got home and the damn thing wont even boot up properly. It freezes at the white screen and slowly these multi-colored verticle lines appear.

Below is a pic. Has this happened to anyone else?

I have no idea what the temps are. This is what happens when I turn it on. I cant do anything else.

I'm making another appointment to have this thing looked at.

Wait so you turn it on and this happens? You don''t even get to the desktop? The Genius bar folks did though?

Thats what they claim. When the genius handed me the computer he asked if I had a trackpad problem. I told him no that it was random shutdown problem. And he said well its ok now.

um.. did you read what he said? that app won't help because all he can see are lines all over the screen and nothing else

I know this is an experience with a completely different computer, but my iMac G5 did some real wacky things on the screen when the video card went out. I have no idea, but it almost looks like it could be a video issue to me.

Except that the MacBook doesn't have a video card. So maybe logic board issues? Sorry to hear about that. Ive only had my MacBook randomly shut down once on me, when I first got it 3 months ago, hopefully this doesn't happen to me or anyone else.

If I were you I woulda opened up my MacBook and checked it before leaving the Apple Store. Do that next time you go in!

Take a deep breath though and don't hate your MacBook. Take good care of it, nurture it, and as long as you are kind respectful and persistent with Apple, your MacBook will be fixed.

If you have a mini dvi out try connecting it to an external monitor and see if it works, make sure you have a keyboard plugged in and a mouse then as soon as you press the power button close the lid of the computer.

YES. This happened to me. I only had my computer for 2 days. Took it to the store, and of course when you turn it on in front of them it works perfect. (it reminds me of that warner bros cartoon with the dancing and singing frog) So they said if it happens again bring it back we'll exchange it. It happened again. They wanted to send it in for repair, i was like screw that this computer is a week old, returned it. And bought another one.

It may not have a video "card", but it most definatly has a video chip-set in it. It is possible that the Intel video chip-set or related components are broken. Which would be horrible, because then the motherboard will have to be replaced.

My Macbook had that problem. Sent it to Apple, they replaced the onboard memory, and now it's fine. Total turnaround time was 3 days.

People on the Apple Discussion boards believe it's a problem with the Thermositer (temperature sensor) which is inaccurately reporting that the CPU is overheating thus turning it off. The lines are a problem with 10.4.7 and a PMU + PRAM reset plus a resolution change will fix it.

Happened to me. Reset the PMU, then change the screen resolution. Restart in that res, then change it back to the regular res. It should work.

its being sent it, again... for another 7-10 for what they believe to be a logic board replacement.

Man I love apple computers. And to think, this is my first one.

But now I'm sending my Macbook and spending more money to upgrade to 17in MBP. I guess I'm F*cking Crazy!

Hope my new $3k silver bullet will have less of an issue (I highly doubt that..).. Otherwise, I'm going to start a petition to get our money back on this useless paperweight! They better resolve this issue before I get my new laptop back.

By the way, I understand your pain.. I hate this computer also!! I might actually switch to PC, instead of otherway around.

Sorry to hear about all your problems. Hopefully 7-10 days is on the high side and you'll have it sooner.

Let us know how things turn out. I am glad you still love Apple, even with all these problems. Sometimes we just have bad luck.

That's excactly what my screen looked like with the old 700 mhz iBook G3 Logic Board problem I had. If yours wasn't the new Macbook I would swear I was looking at my old iBook in that photo. Strange.

Happened to me. Reset the PMU, then change the screen resolution. Restart in that res, then change it back to the regular res. It should work.

Had the same problem and the same steps fixed it.

It's only a problem when I have my MacBook connected to an external monitor, it falls asleep, I unhook it from the monitor when it's still asleep, and then wake it up.

If it weren't for the fact all my Apps and hardware was for the Macintosh I would switch to the ole' PC. Alas, Being in design most of my crap is Macintosh only. I just have to stick it through. Hopefully first time is the charm with my Macbook, I can't really afford having to send it back multiple times.

Heh, hate to break it to you, but the majority of us don't have any problems, so your petition wouldn't do much.

You're going from a tops 4 month old macbook, to a 17" macbook pro? Hmm, I think you should have thought more throughly about your macbook purchase, I certinaly hope you are not just purchasing it because the Macbook left a bad taste in your mouth. The two computers are completely different (MBP being slightly better aside).

My advice to you is to stick it out, and deal with applecare untill you get a working model. I'm really quite happy with mine.
