After debating about this for a LONG time I have decided to get an HP. I just can't bring myself to spend over $2300 on a comparable PB. I feel like I have betrayed my country :( . This is the computer below.

HP DV4000

Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Home Edition with SP2
Intel(R) Pentium(R) M Processor 770 (2.13 GHz)
FREE Upgrade to 15.4" WXGA BrightView Widescreen!
128MB ATI MOBILITY(TM) RADEON(R) X700
256MB DDR2 SDRAM (1x256MB)
80 GB 5400 RPM Hard Drive
DVD+/-RW/R & CD-RW Combo w/Double Layer Support
Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG & Bluetooth(TM)
FREE Second 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery!!

1-year HP Accidental Damage Protection with Express Repair extended service plan

All for $1554 Shipped. As soon as I get it I have a 1GB stick of DDR2 ram waiting for it.

I just can't sit around and wait for the PBs to update so I'll get something that will do the full job.

Bless you, my child... enjoy your new HP.

Resist looking at the new PowerBooks when they're released — that way lies sorrow.

I'm sorta surprised in only comes with 256MB RAM. Most PCs I see, at least at that price range, come with at least 512. Well at least it's not shared RAM.

Good luck, paperinacup!

LOL, I love that "free upgrade to 15" screen!!!". An attempt to trick the dimwitted into thinking this is such a great deal.

Eh, I wouldn't buy a PowerBook either, they're outdated and overpriced. If I'm getting an Apple laptop today, it would be an iBook. Very close in power, and a grand cheaper.

XP Home on a laptop......*shudders* *cries*

Why won't the PB do "the job"? What "job" do you need it to do?

Well through the job I have access to ALL microsoft software (including XP pro) for free so that a plus. It will be doing video and photo editing. I just don't want to buy a PB because I feel that they are WAY overpriced at the moment.

Lol its actually an upgrade to the brightview model.... which i LOVE!!! Only reason I can't use an iBook is the GPU and the screen resolution.

 :(

I'd personally rather go with just an iBook for less than your paying for the HP just so you don't have to deal with windows.

HP is great....Windows is not....

I have a six month old HP laptop (business series) that I'm trying to sell because I want a PB...and I'm sure the update will be soon enough!

Hmm,

Interesting note. All the people who said the HP laptops were great were people who were just about to get them. The people who had them were changing them for powerbooks/iBooks.

I'm writing this from a Dell laptop (the bane of my life) as work won't let me use a mac here.

However I am being made redundant, so now at least I may be able to get a job with a mac :)

well, good luck with that. If I did turn to the dark side, it sure as hell wouldn't be to an HP... but hope it works out for you.

Good job.
All I can say is your doing everyone a service in not buying the powerbook. If you buy anything a company provides no matter the price or quality they will continue to abuse the buyer. I know this may not help but in a small way your refusal to buy a powerbook helps everyone waiting for one.

well, sometimes we need to get windows - fair enough, BUT:

i have 3 hp desktops in my house. they're great for what they are. the value was great, they run well (a little loud but hey) and i always recommend hp when people ask me about desktops.

however, laptops are a totally different story. their laptops are big, chunky and not priced particularly well. sony laptops are nice too- but again, overpriced for what they are (and i speak from experience).

right now, if somebody said 'i need a windows laptop' i'd say get an ibm thinkpad (or is it called a 'lenovo thinkpad' now?) whatever, they're great.

anyway, that's just my opinion :)
